Griffith was re-elected to his fifth term in the office on November 6, 2018, winning 65 percent of votes to defeat Anthony Flaccavento (D). Griffith was first elected to the office in 2010.

In 1994, he began his political career as a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, and he eventually became House majority leader. Prior to his congressional career, Griffith practiced law in Salem, Va. In 2008, he joined a statewide law firm where he was in charge of the Roanoke and Salem branches.
