Company Overview

Lonmin plc was a mining company focused on the exploration, development and production of platinum group metals (PGMs), particularly platinum, palladium and rhodium. Its operations also produced associated metals, including gold, nickel, copper and chrome, from ore extracted in South Africa.

The company’s principal operations were located in the Bushveld Complex, a mineral-rich region of South Africa. Lonmin’s flagship Marikana operation in the North West province included underground and open-pit mining, concentrator facilities and processing operations designed to recover PGMs and related metals.

Founded as the London and Rhodesian Mining and Land Company, Lonmin became one of the major platinum producers listed in London. The company faced significant operational and labor challenges during its later years, including the 2012 Marikana labor unrest. In 2019, Sibanye-Stillwater completed its acquisition of Lonmin, after which Lonmin ceased operating as an independent publicly listed company.
