Key Points

  • Record Q4 performance: MSC Industrial’s sales rose 8.6% year over year to approximately $1.1 billion, while adjusted operating margin expanded to 10.9% and adjusted EPS increased 33% to $1.45. Results benefited from pricing, improving volumes and cost controls despite inflation and freight pressures.
  • Digital Core discontinued: MSC abandoned its costly Digital Core modernization project after recording a $42 million non-cash impairment charge, and is moving to a faster, lower-cost modular AI strategy aimed at improving automation and supporting mid-teens operating margins.
  • Positive fiscal 2027 outlook: The company expects first-quarter average daily sales growth of 9.5%–10.5% and adjusted operating margin of 9.5%–10.1%. Strong momentum in vending, in-plant programs and core customers is expected to support growth, while material, freight and employee costs remain headwinds.

MSC Industrial Direct NYSE: MSM reported record fiscal fourth-quarter sales and higher adjusted operating margin as pricing, improving volumes and cost-control efforts supported results. The company also outlined a fiscal 2027 first-quarter outlook calling for continued sales growth, while acknowledging ongoing inflation in materials, freight and employee-related expenses.

Fourth-quarter sales were approximately $1.1 billion, rising 8.6% year over year on an average daily sales, or ADS, basis. The increase reflected 6.9% from price and 1.6% from improved volumes, according to CFO Rob Kuhns. On a sequential basis, ADS increased about 3% from the fiscal third quarter.

President and CEO Martina McIsaac said the quarter marked a strong finish to fiscal 2026, with record sales and expanding margins. Core-customer ADS growth outpaced total company growth for the fifth consecutive quarter and reached double-digit growth in the fourth quarter, the first such performance in more than three years, she said.

Margins expand despite price-cost pressure

Gross margin increased 20 basis points year over year to 40.6%, despite what Kuhns described as slightly negative transactional price-cost dynamics. The company said the pressure reflected targeted volume decisions and timing differences between higher material costs and contract-price adjustments.

Adjusted operating margin rose 170 basis points to 10.9%, exceeding the high end of MSC’s guidance range. The company generated an adjusted incremental operating margin of 27% during the quarter. Adjusted operating expenses increased $16 million from a year earlier, but declined 140 basis points as a percentage of sales due to higher revenue and cost-optimization savings, partly offset by inflation and freight costs.

Reported operating margin was 6.7%, compared with 8.6% a year earlier, after MSC recorded a $42 million non-cash impairment charge tied to its Digital Core technology project. The charge reduced reported operating margin by 390 basis points and reduced GAAP earnings per share by $0.56.

GAAP EPS was $0.85, down from $1.01 in the prior-year quarter. Adjusted EPS rose 33% to $1.45 from $1.09.

Company abandons Digital Core project for modular AI approach

McIsaac said MSC has discontinued its previous Digital Core program, which had been designed as an end-to-end modernization of procure-to-pay and order-to-cash processes. Following an internal review of the company’s technology infrastructure, management concluded that a faster and more flexible approach was needed to support its productivity goals.

The company is shifting to what McIsaac called an “AI-first modular approach” to systems enhancements, with smaller implementations, lower fixed costs and faster returns on investment. MSC said it has already deployed AI tools for cross-selling, upselling, inventory management, guided selling, supply-chain optimization, sales assistance, product cross-referencing and order automation.

MSC appointed Andrei Dumitriu as vice president of Business Systems and AI Strategy. Dumitriu previously served as Shopify’s head of Revenue Technology and AI.

Management said the technology shift should help support its path toward mid-teens operating margins. McIsaac also said discontinuing Digital Core removes a constraint on process automation and could allow the company to implement productivity initiatives in smaller stages and capture benefits sooner.

Sales-force and solutions momentum

MSC said it has continued to reshape its field sales organization, nearly doubling daily in-person customer touches by the fourth quarter despite having roughly 170 fewer sellers and about 250 fewer total employees than before the changes. The company said it has rebuilt the sales team following attrition and introduced an onboarding process intended to accelerate the time needed for new sellers to become productive.

During the question-and-answer session, McIsaac said customers that did not experience significant disruption from the restructuring were growing in the mid-teens range. Customers that had experienced coverage gaps or significant changes moved from negative growth in the second quarter to positive growth in the third quarter and mid-single-digit growth in the fourth quarter.

Fourth-quarter vending ADS rose about 20%, while sales to customers with an In-Plant Program increased 19%. Ryan Mills, vice president of Investor Relations and Business Development, said ADS per vending machine increased by the low teens, which management viewed as an indication of stronger production activity and demand. National-account sales grew approximately 9%, while public-sector daily sales declined about 1% due to a difficult prior-year comparison.

Fiscal 2027 outlook and capital allocation

For the fiscal first quarter, MSC expects ADS growth of 9.5% to 10.5% year over year. The company said sales rose 9.5% in September and projected growth of about 11.5% in October and 9% in November. The November comparison reflects the effect of a prior-year government shutdown that affected October more heavily than November, Kuhns said.

MSC expects first-quarter adjusted operating margin of 9.5% to 10.1%. Gross margin is expected to decline slightly more than the company’s typical 10-basis-point sequential decline from the fourth to first quarter, reflecting material inflation and the timing of pricing actions. Adjusted operating expenses are expected to rise sequentially because of employee-related costs and freight, partially offset by productivity gains and lower variable expenses.

  • Fiscal 2027 depreciation and amortization: $100 million to $105 million
  • Interest and other expense: $40 million to $45 million
  • Capital expenditures: $90 million to $100 million
  • Effective tax rate: 24.5% to 25.5%
  • Free cash flow conversion: 80% to 90% of net income

MSC ended the quarter with approximately $412 million in net debt, or about one times EBITDA. Fourth-quarter free cash flow totaled roughly $64 million, equal to 133% of net income, while full-year free cash flow conversion was 102%. The company repurchased approximately 160,000 shares during fiscal 2026 and, including dividends, returned about $208 million to shareholders.
