Founded in 2002 and headquartered in San Francisco, California, ECOtality was a recipient of a multi-million-dollar grant from the U.S. Department of Energy under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. This funding supported the deployment of thousands of charging stations in more than a dozen states as part of the broader EV Project. Facing financial challenges, the company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2013, and many of its Blink assets were later acquired by successor entities to continue operating the charging network.
