Iridium World Communications, Inc. was the former publicly traded parent company of Iridium LLC, a satellite communications venture that developed a global network of low-Earth-orbit satellites. The network was designed to provide voice and data communications in areas where terrestrial telecommunications infrastructure was limited or unavailable.

Iridium’s services included satellite telephone communications, paging, and other mobile voice and data products for customers such as government agencies, commercial organizations, maritime users, aviation operators, and remote-area users. The planned network offered coverage across much of the world, including oceans and polar regions.

Iridium World Communications filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2000 after the original satellite business failed to attract enough customers. Its operating assets were subsequently acquired and the service was relaunched under new ownership as Iridium Satellite LLC. Iridium World Communications is therefore primarily associated with the historical development and bankruptcy of the original Iridium satellite communications system.
