Sears, Roebuck and Co., better known simply as Sears, was founded in 1893 by Richard W. Sears and Alvah C. Roebuck. It grew from a mail-order catalog pioneer into one of the largest full-line department store chains in the United States, offering a broad assortment of merchandise and services to American consumers.

At its peak, Sears operated thousands of stores across the U.S., Canada and Mexico under the Sears and Kmart banners. The company’s product mix included appliances (under the Kenmore brand), tools (Craftsman), apparel, home furnishings, outdoor equipment and automotive services. Sears also maintained a network of repair centers, installation services and auto centers that complemented its retail footprint.

In October 2018, Sears Holdings filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and sold most of its retail operations to Transform Holdco LLC, an affiliate of ESL Investments. The remaining public parent company, trading OTCMKTS:SHLDQ, no longer operates active stores and holds only residual claims and assets from the bankruptcy estate. Its affairs are overseen by a board of trustees and legal advisors as the estate is administered and wound down.
