Founded in South Africa in 1936 as South African Pulp and Paper Industries, the company adopted the name Sappi in 1989 as it expanded internationally. Today, Sappi operates manufacturing facilities and sales networks in Europe, North America and Southern Africa, serving customers in markets around the world. Its shares trade on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, and its American depositary shares trade over the counter in the United States under the symbol SPPJY.
