Following its strong Q2 2026 earnings, quantum computing firm IonQ Inc. NYSE: IONQ has emerged as one of the leaders in a space that is increasingly differentiated. Understandably, the pressure was high when the company reported its third-quarter earnings results on Nov. 5, 2026. Even with analysts' lofty expectations, IonQ outperformed on multiple fronts.
The biggest marker of a quantum computing firm's success up to this point is its commercial progress, as many firms are still struggling to make the case that they can convert impressive technological advances into real commercial appeal and sales. This is one area where IonQ has excelled. However, it's not the only strength that IonQ highlighted in its third-quarter report: its continued strong demand, its growing foundry business, its major potential with defense applications, and its substantial cash position all help to strengthen the investment thesis in IonQ.
Top-Line Performance Beats Already High Expectations
After impressive revenue growth in Q2, investors were certainly watching to see if IonQ could maintain this momentum. After all, some quantum firms have managed to report skyrocketing revenue for individual quarters only because of one-off sales of major systems, an impressive but unsustainable feat.
IonQ came through in this area: the firm reported GAAP revenue of $173.8 million, representing a 336% improvement year over year (YOY). Further, this was the sixth straight quarter of record revenue, although nearly half of Q3 sales came from recently acquired SkyWater.
Along with the revenue win for Q3 comes more optimism looking forward. IonQ management boosted full-year guidance to a range of $505 million to $515 million, with management forecasting 110% YOY growth in quantum computing revenue for 2026.
That's not the only component of IonQ's revenue profile that is promising, though. Its platform segment revenue also rose by 127% YOY, and the company is increasingly establishing itself as a go-to foundry service for other quantum firms as well. At a time when the company has made some acquisitions that have raised investor concerns, the firm's purchase of foundry firm SkyWater is generating revenue, contributing $83.5 million this quarter.
Strengths Beyond the Revenue Beat Are Promising for the Future
Like other quantum firms, IonQ has struggled with profitability up to this point. Although noncash warrant gains helped produce GAAP earnings of $1.42 per share, the company reported an adjusted loss of 29 cents per share, about six cents narrower than analysts expected. The firm may be able to move steadily toward profitability as it continues to scale.
While rival D-Wave Quantum Inc. NASDAQ: QBTS was unable to match IonQ's revenue generation capabilities in its Q2 2026 earnings report, D-Wave did impress with its strong bookings growth. For the most recent quarter, IonQ has shown similar interest from customers. The company said its Superion 256 capacity for 2027 is fully sold out and reported remaining performance obligations of $1.2 billion, including $479 million from SkyWater. IonQ's platform segment signed approximately $290 million in new contracts during Q3.

IonQ Stock Forecast DetailsIonQ is expanding its foundry business as well, having extended a production agreement with D-Wave and signed a new multiyear contract with quantum hardware firm Qolab during Q3. This could be an area in which IonQ can eventually strengthen its gross margins as it scales.
While some quantum firms are drilling down to specialize in particular applications of the technology, IonQ seems to be taking the opposite approach, expanding its range of partnerships to bring its tech to different sectors. The company distinguished itself as the only trapped-ion firm to advance to Stage C of the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency's (DARPA) Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, as part of a program with a potential value of up to $300 million.
Finally, IonQ's expansion in all of these areas requires substantial funding. The company ended Q3 with $1.7 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and investments, rising to approximately $3.7 billion on a pro forma basis following an October equity offering.
IonQ continues to face significant challenges from more established tech rivals with massive resources to dedicate toward quantum R&D and its own operating expenses, which rose to nearly $607 million last quarter. Still, the latest earnings report may confirm for many investors that IonQ is a leader in the industry and a firm with plenty of growth potential, despite these underlying risks.
