Keurig Dr Pepper NASDAQ: KDP delivered
Q3 2026 earnings that could have been an election preview. On the one hand, the company beat on the top and bottom lines and reiterated its full-year guidance. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) of 66 cents topped estimates by about 6%. Net sales jumped 70% to $7.34 billion, boosted by the JDE Peet’s acquisition.
On the other hand, single-serve coffee demand was under pressure. Value-conscious consumers increasingly favored lower-cost coffee formats and private-label products, although Peet's K-Cup pods helped support overall shipments.
KDP shares are up over 30% year-to-date as investors weigh the potential benefits of the spin-off of the company's coffee business. But was this report enough to build investor confidence before the company splits? The separation is expected in early 2027. The answer may depend on which half of the company investors are watching.
Energy Drinks Carried the Quarter
Consumers are clearly spending, albeit looking for value. That tracks with what investors have heard from Coca-Cola NYSE: KO and PepsiCo NASDAQ: PEP this earnings season. The highlight of the report was where the growth was coming from.
That was KDP's beverage business, particularly energy drinks. U.S. Refreshment Beverages net sales rose 10.9% to $3 billion. Volume and mix contributed 7.2%, while pricing added 3.7%.
That means consumers are buying more cans, not just paying more for them. A balance like that is a little different than what investors have heard from some consumer brands.
Energy was the standout. KDP’s energy drink market share topped 10% for the first time, up from about 6% two years ago. GHOST became the company’s fourth brand with $1 billion in annual retail sales. Bloom and a refreshed C4 also contributed.
The core brand isn’t standing still either. Retail sales of the Dr Pepper Zero franchise grew 25% and passed a $1 billion annualized run rate. The segment’s adjusted operating margin was a healthy 29.1%.
Coffee Remains the Problem Child for KDP
The coffee side told a different story. U.S. Coffee net sales rose just 2.7%. Volume and mix grew 6.9%, but net pricing fell 4.2%.
KDP used lower green coffee costs to fund promotions and narrow price gaps. Even so, pod shipments rose only 0.3%. Some of that growth came from new private-label distribution wins and Peet's K-cup pods.
Management said years of coffee inflation have made lower- and middle-income consumers more price-sensitive. Many are shifting to cheaper roast-and-ground and instant formats. Private label gained share in both total coffee and single-serve.
Segment operating income looked better, up 11.4% on an adjusted basis. However, some of that growth came from one-time tariff refunds. Those refunds totaled $99 million across the company in the quarter.
As a result, KDP trimmed its legacy EPS growth outlook to 3% to 5%, down from 4% to 6%. JDE Peet’s filled the gap. Its expected contribution to EPS growth increased to seven to eight percentage points, up from six to seven points previously.
Investors May Be Mispricing the Spin-Off Story
Investors have bid up KDP partly on expectations surrounding the coffee spin-off. Yet the fastest-growing, most consistent business is the one staying behind.
The as-yet-unnamed beverage company, which KDP calls Beverage Co., keeps Dr Pepper, Canada Dry, and the energy portfolio. Tim Cofer will remain its CEO. Global Coffee Co. inherits Keurig, JDE Peet’s and the single-serve headwinds.
Global Coffee Co. also has a new leader. Russ Torres, formerly president and COO of Kimberly-Clark NASDAQ: KMB, joined KDP on Nov. 3. He takes over the coffee business following the departure of Rafa Oliveira, who left for Heineken OTCMKTS: HEINY in July.
Balance sheet considerations remain. Pro forma leverage stood at 4.1 times at quarter-end. KDP’s targets call for 3.5 to 4.0 times leverage for Beverage Co. and 3.75 to 4.25 times for Global Coffee Co. at separation. Management also said timing depends on market conditions.
The Chart Is Bullish But Stretched
Technically, the KDP stock chart favors the bulls. KDP broke above its June high near $34 in mid-October. It has held well above its 50-day simple moving average since.
Shares slipped after the report but rebounded more than 5% during intraday trading on Nov. 4. The rebound brought shares back near their 52-week high.
There are caution flags, though. The stock trades about 12% above its 50-day SMA of $32.68. The MACD histogram is also shrinking, a sign momentum is fading. That said, a pullback toward $34 would not necessarily break the uptrend.

This report didn’t change the thesis, but it sharpened it. The beverage business is earning its keep. The coffee business is leaning on JDE Peet’s while Keurig fights for shelf space.
Before the split, the key question is valuation. Beverage Co. may deserve more credit than it’s getting. Global Coffee Co. still must prove its single-serve business can recover.
