Founded in 1925, the company focuses on discovering, developing, manufacturing and commercializing prescription medicines, with an emphasis on biotechnology and innovative therapies for serious and unmet medical needs.

Chugai’s principal therapeutic areas include oncology, hematology, immunology, neuroscience and renal diseases. Its products include Actemra (known as RoActemra in some markets) for inflammatory and immune-related conditions, Hemlibra for hemophilia A, and Alecensa for certain forms of lung cancer. The company also develops antibody-based medicines and other biologic treatments using proprietary technologies.

Chugai has a strategic alliance with Roche, which became its majority shareholder in 2002. Through this relationship, Chugai medicines are marketed in Japan and distributed internationally through Roche’s global network, while Chugai retains responsibility for its operations in Japan. The company is led by President and Chief Executive Officer Tatsuro Kosaka.
