Arrow Electronics NYSE: ARW reported record third-quarter revenue of $10.7 billion and record non-GAAP diluted earnings of $6.22 per share, as higher component prices, strong customer demand and improved operating efficiency lifted results.
Revenue increased 39% from a year earlier, while non-GAAP earnings per share rose 158%. The company’s non-GAAP operating margin expanded to 4.1% from 2.8% a year earlier.
Interim Chief Executive Officer Bill Austen said results benefited from expense and working capital management, increased pricing in some component categories and higher-margin services. Both Global Components and Global Enterprise Computing Solutions, or ECS, exceeded their sales guidance.
Component Prices and Demand Drive Growth
Global Components sales rose 8% sequentially to $7.9 billion. The segment’s non-GAAP operating income increased 4% from the prior quarter to $413 million, while its operating margin declined 20 basis points sequentially to 5.2%. The margin was up 160 basis points from a year earlier.
Chief Financial Officer Raj Agrawal said most of the segment’s third-quarter revenue growth was driven by price increases, with memory among the categories affected by limited capacity. Higher prices benefited both revenue and profit dollars.
Agrawal said Arrow had not assumed significant additional memory or other price increases in its fourth-quarter outlook. Instead, the company expects sequential growth in Components to be driven primarily by unit volume.
“If we had gotten our hands on more product, we would have sold more,” Agrawal said, describing demand as “extremely strong.”
Austen said Components book-to-bill ratios remained well above parity and backlog extended into mid-2027. Lead times continued to increase, though they remained below levels associated with a pervasive shortage.
Rick Marano, president of Global Components, said recovering demand and expanding lead times have made it more difficult to obtain inventory when Arrow wants it. He said suppliers were not withholding products from the company based on end market or technology.
ECS Exceeds Expectations
ECS sales rose 29% year over year to $2.8 billion, helped by strong demand and faster conversion of backlog into revenue. Billings increased 14% to $5.9 billion. Non-GAAP operating income rose 53% to $99 million, and the segment’s operating margin increased 60 basis points to 3.6%.
Agrawal said the company also restructured an underperforming multiyear contract with a partner after terminating another contract with the same partner. He said the actions put the business on a healthier trajectory.
Arrow expects hardware to represent a larger share of ECS revenue in the fourth quarter. Agrawal said that mix would depress the segment’s reported margin as a percentage of net sales, although the company expects margins measured against billings to be relatively unchanged from a year earlier.
Inventory Investment and Fourth-Quarter Outlook
Arrow’s inventory increased $1.4 billion sequentially to $7.3 billion. Austen said about $600 million of the increase related to Arrow Intelligent Solutions, which builds and tests specialized compute and storage equipment for customers. He said large orders in the pipeline did not ship during the quarter and are expected to ship in coming quarters.
The company used $441 million in operating cash flow during the third quarter but generated $577 million for the first nine months of the year. Gross debt ended the quarter at $2.8 billion, and Arrow repurchased $93 million of shares during the period.
For the fourth quarter, Arrow forecast:
- Sales of $11.55 billion to $12.15 billion, up 36% year over year at the midpoint.
- Global Components sales of $8.15 billion to $8.55 billion.
- ECS sales of $3.4 billion to $3.6 billion.
- Non-GAAP diluted earnings of $7 to $7.20 per share.
Leadership Changes
Austen said ECS President Eric Nowak plans to retire after 22 years with Arrow. Nowak will remain in his role through year-end and serve as an adviser until the end of the first quarter of 2027.
Rodney Clark will join Arrow on November 9 and succeed Nowak as ECS president effective January 1. Austen also said Anuj Gore will become chief information and technology officer effective November 9.
