The company was founded in China in 2005 as YY Inc. and later changed its name to JOYY Inc. In 2020, JOYY agreed to sell YY Live, its domestic live-streaming business in China, to Baidu, subject to regulatory review and closing conditions. Following the transaction, JOYY has focused primarily on its international social-media and entertainment businesses, particularly those operated by its BIGO subsidiary. JOYY was founded by Li Xuelin, who has served as the company’s chairman and chief executive officer.
