A123 Systems was a U.S.-based developer and manufacturer of lithium-ion battery technology and energy-storage systems. The company was known for its proprietary Nanophosphate lithium-ion chemistry, which was designed to provide high power, durability and safety for demanding applications.

Its products included battery cells, modules, packs and complete energy-storage systems for electric and hybrid vehicles, grid and commercial energy storage, power tools, and other industrial applications. A123 Systems supplied technology to automotive and industrial customers in the United States and internationally, with manufacturing and business operations that historically extended across North America, Europe and Asia.

Founded in 2001 by Ric Fulop and other technology and battery-industry entrepreneurs, A123 Systems became a publicly traded company before filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2012. Wanxiang America acquired substantially all of the company’s operating assets in 2013, and the A123 Systems business subsequently operated as part of the Wanxiang Group. A123 Systems’ former public-company securities traded under the symbol AONEQ on the over-the-counter market.
