Axion Power International, Inc. was a developer and manufacturer of advanced lead-carbon battery technology, known as the PbC® battery. Founded in the early 2000s and headquartered in New Castle, Pennsylvania, the company focused on combining features of ultracapacitors and lead-acid chemistry to deliver improved charge acceptance, extended cycle life, and enhanced safety compared with traditional lead-acid batteries.

Axion’s product portfolio included individual PbC battery cells, modules, and fully integrated energy storage systems designed for grid frequency regulation, renewable energy integration, uninterruptible power supplies, and motive-power applications in rail and industrial vehicles. The company forged strategic partnerships with automakers, rail operators, and engineering-procurement-construction firms to pilot and deploy its storage solutions in North America and Europe.

Although Axion Power International filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in December 2017 and subsequently ceased operations, its research and development efforts contributed to advances in lead-carbon battery design. The company’s PbC technology continues to influence ongoing work in low-cost, high-cycle-life energy storage systems.
