Founded in 1976 by Manny Mashouf, the company expanded through specialty retail stores, outlet locations and an e-commerce business. bebe stores primarily served customers in the United States, with a broader international presence at various points through stores, licensing arrangements and other distribution channels.

The company announced plans to close its remaining retail stores in 2017 and subsequently transitioned away from operating a traditional store network.
