BG Group plc was an international oil and gas exploration and production company headquartered in the United Kingdom. The company focused on finding, developing and producing natural gas and crude oil, with operations spanning exploration, upstream production, liquefied natural gas (LNG) and related gas-marketing activities.

BG Group’s assets and projects included natural gas and oil interests in countries such as Brazil, Australia, Egypt and Tanzania. It was particularly known for its LNG portfolio, which connected gas supplies from producing regions with customers in international energy markets. Its activities also included the development of offshore fields and associated infrastructure.

The company was created in 1997 through the demerger of the exploration and production businesses of British Gas. Helge Lund served as BG Group’s chief executive, while Andrew Gould was chairman during the company’s final period as an independent business. Royal Dutch Shell, now Shell plc, completed its acquisition of BG Group in February 2016, after which BG Group ceased operating as a standalone publicly traded company.
