Less than 60 days remain before a major defense deadline hits the market. Starting January 1, 2027, the DFARS rules bar Chinese-origin rare earth metals and magnets from U.S. defense systems, including the F-35, submarines and aircraft carriers. Anupam Ghildial says China currently makes over 90% of light rare earths, 97% of heavy rare earths and over 90% of magnets, while the U.S. produces only about 1% of the magnets it needs.
In this interview, Anupam Ghildyal with REalloys breaks down the deadline could mean for critical materials and defense stocks, and why he says the election won’t change it. He also explains how long it could take to rebuild rare earth processing in the U.S., why he believes demand for domestic supply is so strong, and what the long-term outlook looks like for investors.
