About Berkshire Hathaway

Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE:BRK.A) is a multinational conglomerate and holding company headquartered in Omaha, Nebraska. It owns and operates a diverse group of businesses across insurance and reinsurance, utilities and energy, freight rail transportation, manufacturing, retail and service industries. In addition to wholly owned subsidiaries, Berkshire maintains a large portfolio of publicly traded equity investments that it manages on a long-term basis.

The company’s principal activities include property and casualty insurance and reinsurance operations that generate investment “float” used to fund acquisitions and investments, a significant regulated and non-regulated energy business, and the BNSF freight railroad. Its operating businesses encompass industrial manufacturers, building products, consumer goods and retail brands, automotive dealerships and parts, and a range of service companies. Berkshire’s decentralized operating model gives subsidiary managers broad autonomy while capital allocation and investment decisions are centralized at the parent level.

Berkshire Hathaway began as a textile manufacturer formed through earlier 19th-century companies and was transformed into an investment and holding company beginning in the mid-1960s after investor Warren Buffett acquired control. Under Buffett’s long-standing leadership, the company built a reputation for value-oriented investing, use of insurance float to fund growth, and strategic acquisitions of cash-generating businesses. While headquartered in the United States, Berkshire’s businesses and investments operate and serve customers globally. Senior leaders who have played prominent roles in the company’s succession planning and operations include Warren Buffett as chairman and chief executive and executives who oversee insurance and non-insurance operating groups.
