Petróleo Brasileiro S.A., commonly known as Petrobras, is a Brazilian integrated energy company engaged primarily in the exploration, development, production, refining, transportation and marketing of oil and natural gas. The company also produces and markets fuels, lubricants, petrochemicals and other petroleum-related products, and has activities connected with natural gas, biofuels and renewable energy.

Petrobras is particularly known for its deepwater and ultradeepwater operations, including the development of Brazil’s offshore pre-salt oil reserves. Its operations span the energy value chain, from upstream exploration and production to refining, logistics, fuel distribution and the sale of petroleum and gas products. The company’s principal operating base is Brazil, although it has maintained international activities and partnerships at various times.

Founded in 1953, Petrobras is headquartered in Rio de Janeiro and remains controlled by the Brazilian government. The company is led by Chief Executive Officer Magda Chambriard, who assumed the position in 2024. Petrobras shares trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol PBR.A, in addition to being listed in Brazil.
