The pact that ran the world and dollar just expired
In 1974, a U.S.-Saudi deal tied oil sales exclusively to dollars, forcing nations worldwide to hold dollars and recycle profits into Treasuries. That agreement came up for renewal in June 2024 and quietly lapsed. Since then, Saudi Arabia signed a $7 billion currency swap with China, began settling some oil trades in yuan, and joined Beijing's mBridge payment network.
