Key Points

  • Q3 sales fell 8% to $305 million after the Road Markings divestiture, but adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 230 basis points to 35.4% and adjusted EPS rose to $1.63.
  • Filtration growth and North American hybrid vehicle demand supported Performance Materials. Ingevity is upgrading filtration sales toward higher-value uses, including water treatment and biogas purification, with benefits expected to build into 2027.
  • Higher asphalt costs are pressuring Pavement Technologies and could slow warm mix asphalt growth in 2027. The Advanced Polymer Technologies sale process is taking longer than expected, while the company maintained its $390 million midpoint for 2026 adjusted EBITDA guidance.
  • Five stocks to consider instead of Ingevity.

Ingevity NYSE: NGVT reported lower third-quarter sales following a divestiture but expanded its adjusted profit margin, as executives pointed to growth in filtration and continued demand from North American hybrid vehicle production.

The specialty materials company also said the sale of its Advanced Polymer Technologies business could extend into early 2027, although it remains hopeful of announcing a transaction before year-end. Higher asphalt costs, meanwhile, are weighing on its pavement business and could slow warm mix asphalt growth next year.

Third-quarter sales fell approximately 8% to $305 million, primarily because of the April divestiture of the Road Markings product line, Chief Financial Officer Phil Platt said. Excluding Road Markings, sales rose 2%, as higher pricing and a favorable product mix offset lower volumes in Performance Materials and Pavement Technologies.

Adjusted EBITDA from continuing operations declined approximately 2% to $108 million, while the adjusted EBITDA margin expanded 230 basis points to 35.4%. Adjusted earnings per share rose to $1.63 from $1.31 a year earlier. Free cash flow was approximately $86 million, down $32 million; Platt attributed approximately $21 million of the decline to prior-year working capital benefits from divested operations.

Filtration gains and hybrid demand

Performance Materials sales were nearly flat at approximately $154 million, as strength in North American automotive demand and filtration growth offset softer automotive demand in China and Europe. Segment EBITDA was approximately $83 million, also nearly unchanged, with a margin of 54.1%.

CEO and President Dave Li said Ingevity continues to benefit from the shift toward hybrid vehicles in North America, even as underlying automotive production remains muted. He described the hybrid transition as being in its “early to mid innings.”

Filtration is another area of investment. Li said the company has secured several additional contracts for water treatment applications after announcing its first commercial win last quarter. Municipalities are looking for solutions to remove PFAS ahead of required reporting in early 2027, he said. The company is also seeing rapid growth in biogas purification, where its activated carbon helps remove contaminants from renewable natural gas.

Ingevity is initially focusing on upgrading existing filtration volume into higher-value applications rather than making a significant near-term volume shift, Platt said. Li said more than 20% of the company’s volume had been sold into filtration at negligible EBITDA, and he expects the contribution from upgrading that business to accelerate into 2027.

Asphalt costs pressure pavement business

Pavement Technologies sales fell 24% to $106 million, primarily because of the Road Markings divestiture. Excluding the divested product line, sales were nearly flat, with higher pricing offsetting softer demand. Segment EBITDA declined by $7.3 million to $19.6 million, reflecting lower volumes, retained costs associated with the divestiture, and higher input and logistics expenses.

Platt said asphalt costs in some U.S. regions have risen about 50% since the start of the year, potentially raising the cost of a road by about 20%. Customers with finite budgets have shifted spending toward preservation and maintenance rather than paving new roads, he said.

If elevated asphalt costs persist without a significant increase in customer budgets, that shift could hinder mid-single-digit growth in warm mix asphalt in 2027, Platt said. He added that about two-thirds of the pavement business is tied to preservation and maintenance emulsifiers, with the remaining third in warm mix.

Li said the company is pursuing pricing and productivity measures and introducing new products to offset the pressure. He maintained that the longer-term drivers for warm mix adoption remain intact.

Sale process and outlook

Advanced Polymer Technologies sales increased approximately 18% to $45 million, supported by higher pricing and a mix shift toward higher-value products. EBITDA rose to approximately $12 million from $11 million, although the segment’s margin fell 280 basis points to 26%, partly because pricing surcharges carried little or no incremental margin.

Li said Ingevity has narrowed the field of potential buyers for the business to several interested parties. The process is taking longer than initially expected, he said, but the company is focused on achieving the best outcome for shareholders rather than meeting a calendar deadline.

For 2026, Ingevity narrowed its adjusted EBITDA outlook to $385 million to $395 million, retaining its $390 million midpoint. It expects sales of approximately $1.1 billion, adjusted diluted earnings per share of $5.25 to $5.45 and free cash flow of $220 million to $230 million. Li said the cash flow outlook reflects increased capital spending and working capital investments heading into 2027.

The company repurchased approximately $39 million of shares during the quarter, bringing year-to-date repurchases to approximately $125 million. It said it remains on pace to meet its commitment to repurchase at least $300 million by the end of 2027.
