InterDigital NASDAQ: IDCC reported third-quarter 2026 results above its guidance range, supported by a new consumer electronics licensing agreement with a top PC manufacturer and continued growth in its recurring licensing revenue.
Revenue totaled $193.4 million, up 17% from a year earlier and above the company’s prior outlook of $154 million to $158 million. Adjusted EBITDA rose 25% year over year to $131.3 million, while adjusted EBITDA margin reached approximately 68%. GAAP diluted earnings per share were $2.34, and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share were $3.11, which was up 22% year over year.
Chief Executive Officer Liren Chen said the company’s annualized recurring revenue reached a record $629 million, up from $588 million a year earlier. The quarter included $36.2 million of catch-up revenue, compared with $17.7 million in the prior-year quarter.
PC License Expands Consumer Electronics Coverage
InterDigital said it agreed to enter into a patent license agreement with a top PC manufacturer, although the final terms will be determined through binding arbitration. Chief Financial Officer Rich Brezski said the company began recognizing revenue from the agreement during the third quarter using what it described as a conservative estimate of the consideration it expects to receive.
Chen said the agreement brings 70% of the global PC market under InterDigital licenses, including four of the world’s five largest PC makers. The company said it has signed four of the top 10 global PC vendors and continues to pursue the remaining portion of the market.
InterDigital also completed a licensing agreement with EV charger maker KEBA. Revenue from its consumer electronics, internet-of-things and automotive program nearly doubled year over year to $55.7 million. Smartphone licensing revenue was $122.6 million, while streaming and cloud services contributed $15 million.
Regarding Lenovo, Chen said InterDigital completed an arbitration hearing earlier in October and expects a decision in the first half of 2027, though timing remains uncertain.
Enforcement Actions Target TCL and Disney
The company highlighted progress in its patent enforcement efforts against television maker TCL and streaming company Disney. Chen said a Brazilian court granted InterDigital a preliminary injunction against TCL after an independent expert report found that TCL infringed two patents in the case, that the patents were essential to the HEVC video standard, and that InterDigital’s licensing offers met FRAND, or fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory, obligations.
According to Chen, the Brazilian court concluded that TCL’s offer was “an order of magnitude too low” and ordered the company to stop implementing the relevant standard and HEVC technology in devices manufactured, imported or offered for sale in Brazil.
In Europe, InterDigital received two additional injunctions from the Unified Patent Court against Disney. One concerns HEVC video encoding technology, while the other covers technology for sharing video between devices, such as casting content from a smartphone to a television. Chen said both injunctions apply across multiple European Union countries and that the court upheld the validity of the patents at issue.
Chen said InterDigital has won eight of eight patent trials in its campaign against Disney and received eight injunctions. He added that Disney had restored some 4K content in Germany using the VP9 codec following earlier injunctions. InterDigital has filed a new case involving VP9, which is scheduled to be heard in December.
Video Codec Adoption and Research Efforts
Chen pointed to growing adoption of the Versatile Video Coding, or VVC, standard. Qualcomm and MediaTek have announced VVC hardware decoding in their latest smartphone chipsets, while Google has added VVC support in the latest version of Android, according to the company.
InterDigital views VVC as a potential incremental licensing opportunity across devices and streaming services. Chen said adoption will likely develop over multiple years as device support encourages content and service providers to use the codec.
The company also said it and research partner NHK received a Best in Show award at IBC 2026 for a VVC multilayer coding demonstration. The technology is designed to allow multiple versions of the same content to be delivered in a single VVC bitstream.
Cash Generation, Capital Returns and Outlook
Cash from operations was $150.4 million during the quarter, and free cash flow totaled $136.2 million. InterDigital ended the period with $1.1 billion in cash equivalents and short-term investments.
The company returned $121.2 million to shareholders and creditors during the quarter, including $18.7 million in share repurchases, $19.3 million of declared dividends and $83.2 million of debt repayment. It increased its quarterly dividend to $0.75 per share from $0.70 per share.
For the fourth quarter, InterDigital expects revenue from existing contracts of $154 million to $160 million and adjusted EBITDA of $80 million to $88 million. Its outlook excludes potential contributions from new agreements or enforcement outcomes.
For full-year 2026, the company forecasts adjusted EBITDA of $507 million to $515 million, GAAP diluted EPS of $8.93 to $9.16, and non-GAAP diluted EPS of $11.99 to $12.25. Brezski said existing contracts alone are expected to push full-year revenue above the $810 million midpoint of the company’s previous revenue outlook.
