Albemarle NYSE: ALB reported higher third-quarter sales and earnings as stronger lithium prices and demand for bromine products boosted results, while management raised its outlook for the specialties business and cut its capital spending plans.
The company reported net sales of $1.6 billion, up 19% from a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA of $646 million, an increase of 186%. Net income attributable to Albemarle was $297 million, or $2.15 per share, while adjusted earnings were $2.58 per share. Adjusted EBITDA margin expanded to 42%.
Chairman and CEO Kent Masters said the company had generated $1.5 billion in operating cash flow and $1.2 billion in free cash flow through the first nine months of 2026. Albemarle also achieved more than $150 million in annualized cost and productivity improvements, reaching the high end of its full-year target.
Specialties Outlook Rises as Capital Spending Falls
Albemarle increased its full-year adjusted EBITDA outlook for specialties to $350 million to $375 million, citing strong year-to-date performance, expectations for steady fourth-quarter demand and continued productivity improvements. Third-quarter adjusted EBITDA in the segment rose 31% year over year, helped by higher prices and volumes and increased demand for bromine products.
CFO Neal Sheorey said the conflict in the Middle East had raised certain raw material and logistics costs, but concerns about petrochemical supply chains had also supported demand for Albemarle’s products. The company’s Jordan Bromine Company joint venture achieved record quarterly production in the third quarter, he said.
Albemarle reduced its expected 2026 capital expenditures to $300 million to $350 million from approximately $500 million. Sheorey attributed the reduction to capital efficiency improvements and the rescheduling of some early-stage project spending. The company is targeting less than $300 million in sustaining capital spending this year.
Capital spending should rise modestly in 2027, Sheorey said, as some spending shifts into next year and the company progresses growth projects. He did not provide a numerical forecast.
Lithium Prices Cloud Fourth-Quarter Outlook
Energy storage adjusted EBITDA rose 351% year over year, primarily because of higher lithium pricing. Shipments of 56,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent, or LCE, were lower than a year earlier, when shipment timing and inventory reductions had boosted volumes, Sheorey said.
For the fourth quarter, Albemarle expects energy storage sales and adjusted EBITDA to decline sequentially if lower market prices persist, with volumes steady from the third quarter. Sheorey also expects margins to fall as higher-priced spodumene from the Talison joint venture moves through inventory and into production costs.
The company maintained its full-year sales volume expectation of 225,000 to 235,000 metric tons LCE. For 2027, Sheorey reiterated a forecast of 240,000 to 260,000 metric tons, supported in part by a full year of contribution from the Greenbushes CGP3 expansion.
Masters said CGP3 achieved 30 days of nameplate performance in September after an earlier outage. Albemarle is also studying expansion opportunities at Wodgina and Greenbushes, while a direct lithium extraction project at the Salar de Atacama has entered the feasibility stage.
Management Sees Strong Demand Despite Price Declines
Masters said global lithium consumption increased 48% year to date, driven by energy storage systems and recovering electric vehicle demand. Stationary storage production nearly doubled through September, he said, while global EV sales rose 11%.
Albemarle expects lithium battery demand for stationary storage to grow at a compound annual rate of approximately 25% through 2030. Masters said the company sees battery producers’ order books remaining solid in the first half of 2027, although he declined to estimate overall lithium demand growth for that year.
Management described a disconnect between declining lithium prices and the physical market. Chief Commercial Officer Eric Norris said demand remained strong and supply growth had struggled to keep pace. He also pointed to potential supply challenges, including the economics of some Australian projects at lower prices and Zimbabwe’s reaffirmed export restrictions.
“The fundamentals in the physical market do not support what we are seeing in the spot market now,” Norris said, adding that the company was not predicting prices.
Masters said Albemarle regularly considers share buybacks but views its growth projects as a better long-term investment. The company wants to assess where it is in the lithium cycle before making a commitment, he said.
The call was Masters’ last as CEO. As previously announced, Rag Udd will become CEO on February 1, when Masters will move to executive chairman.
