Key Points

  • Q3 revenue surged 118% to $42.8 million, with adjusted EBITDA of $12.8 million and positive operating cash flow. BlackSky raised its 2026 revenue outlook to $140 million–$150 million and expects adjusted EBITDA of $18 million–$24 million.
  • Space-based intelligence and AI services revenue grew 107% to $32.7 million as customers shift from pilots to subscriptions. The company said it has the backlog to support 50% full-year growth in this business versus 2025, though pilot timing can make quarterly revenue uneven.
  • BlackSky was selected as the exclusive provider of high-resolution optical satellites for a planned $1 billion international space-AI initiative, but has only received a small initial development contract and is negotiating larger agreements. It reported a $355 million backlog and $231 million in cash, equivalents and short-term investments.

BlackSky Technology NYSE: BKSY more than doubled third-quarter revenue and raised its full-year outlook for the second time in 2026, as demand for its Gen-3 satellite imagery and intelligence services drove record sales and adjusted earnings.

Revenue rose 118% to $42.8 million from $19.6 million a year earlier, while adjusted EBITDA reached $12.8 million, representing a 30% margin. The company also reported positive operating cash flow for the quarter.

Chief Executive Officer Brian O’Toole said customer adoption of Gen-3 services and progress on satellite programs contributed to the results. BlackSky now expects full-year revenue of $140 million to $150 million and adjusted EBITDA of $18 million to $24 million. It maintained its capital expenditure forecast of $50 million to $60 million.

Intelligence Services Drive Growth

Space-based intelligence and AI services generated $32.7 million in third-quarter revenue, up 107% from a year earlier and 34% sequentially. O’Toole said customers are moving from initial pilots to longer-term subscriptions as they integrate BlackSky’s services into daily operations.

The company said it has secured the backlog needed to deliver 50% full-year growth in that business compared with 2025. O’Toole said the business has reached an annual revenue run rate of more than $100 million, combining recurring subscriptions with pilot programs.

During the quarter, BlackSky completed a seven-figure, two-month Gen-3 Assured pilot with a major U.S. government customer. An international defense partner also expanded its subscription, while HEO signed a seven-figure annual extension that adds Gen-3 to its non-Earth imaging services.

O’Toole cautioned that pilot size and timing can make revenue variable from quarter to quarter, as can the transition from pilots to subscriptions. The company did not provide a breakdown of pilot revenue versus its recurring subscription base.

Satellite Programs and New Opportunities

Mission Solutions revenue rose roughly fivefold to $4.7 million as BlackSky met customer program milestones. Revenue from Advanced Technology Programs increased approximately 80% to $5.4 million, primarily from government-funded development of its AROS program for a planned 2028 launch.

BlackSky was selected as the exclusive provider of very high-resolution electro-optical satellites for a $1 billion international initiative to build AI infrastructure in space. The planned initial constellation of 50 satellites will include radar, optical and other sensors and is designed to serve users across France, Europe and the United Arab Emirates.

O’Toole said BlackSky has received a small initial contract for development work and is negotiating definitive agreements for a larger contract. He declined to estimate BlackSky’s potential share of the initiative, saying more details would follow in the coming months.

The company launched its fifth Gen-3 satellite in September and said it entered revenue-generating operations within 24 hours. BlackSky expects to launch two more for its commercial constellation in 2026 and an eighth in early 2027. It also expects multiple sovereign satellite deliveries to customers in the fourth quarter.

O’Toole said deliveries refer to hardware leaving production, rather than necessarily being launched. Chief Financial Officer Henry Dubois said revenue on customized customer programs is recognized over time as work progresses, with some triggers at delivery.

Cash Position and Fourth-Quarter Outlook

BlackSky reported net income of $18.5 million, compared with a net loss of $15.3 million a year earlier. It ended the quarter with $231 million in cash equivalents, restricted cash and short-term investments. Third-quarter capital expenditures were $15.4 million, bringing the year-to-date total to $46.5 million.

Dubois said positive operating cash flow did not include extraordinary one-time receipts such as prepayments. Management said the company’s liquidity is sufficient to complete its baseline Gen-3 constellation in 2027 and pursue other initiatives.

Dubois put total backlog at $355 million, with about $45 million expected in the fourth quarter. O’Toole distinguished that backlog from the company’s pipeline of potential opportunities, which he said spans several billion dollars and includes opportunities with different sales cycles.

Asked about the implied fourth-quarter adjusted EBITDA outlook, O’Toole pointed to a changing revenue mix from satellite deliveries, timing of program work and variability in pilot revenue. BlackSky did not provide 2027 guidance; O’Toole said it expects to do so in the first quarter.

Commercial Pilot Targets Investors

BlackSky is also working with SkyFi on a pilot that would use Gen-3 imagery to deliver automated facility-monitoring insights through Robinhood agent applications. Proposed uses include tracking vehicle production, activity at e-commerce fulfillment hubs, data center construction and theme park attendance.

O’Toole said the pilot is expected to run for several months and will test the application and service while exploring a longer-term subscription model. He said the arrangement is not exclusive, leaving BlackSky able to pursue other commercial channels.
