Intrepid Potash NYSE: IPI reported higher third-quarter earnings and raised its 2026 Trio production outlook, as improvements at its East Mine helped lower costs for the specialty fertilizer product. The company also outlined plans for growth investments and said it had stepped up share repurchases.

Sales from continuing operations were roughly flat year over year at $51 million, while gross margin remained at $10 million, Chief Financial Officer Jason Tremblay said on the earnings call. Net income from continuing operations rose to $1.7 million, or $0.13 per diluted share, from $700,000, or $0.05 per share, a year earlier.

Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization from continuing operations increased to $11.7 million from $10.7 million. Tremblay noted that the third quarter is typically among Intrepid’s seasonally weakest, falling between spring planting and fall fertilizer applications.

Trio production gains support higher outlook

Third-quarter Trio production rose 19% from a year earlier, driven largely by improved performance at the East Mine, Vice President of Operations Rick Kim said. Operating hours increased 5%, while tons per operating hour rose approximately 20%. Higher production helped reduce cost of goods sold per ton by 13%.

Trio sales increased to $19.1 million from $18.1 million, with volumes flat and the average net realized selling price up 1.5%. Segment gross margin grew 33%, helped by a 13,000-ton increase in production, improved absorption of costs and favorable product mix, Tremblay said.

Intrepid raised its full-year 2026 Trio production guidance by 10,000 tons, though executives did not provide the revised total on the call. For 2027, the company expects production of 320,000 to 330,000 tons and plans to invest approximately $16 million in an initiative to lift annual output by about 30,000 tons above first-half 2026 run rates. Management expects an internal rate of return of approximately 30% on the initiative.

Chief Executive Officer Kevin Crutchfield said recent production rates have been strong but cautioned against annualizing a single quarter. Tremblay added that scheduled maintenance is lighter in the second half of 2026, contributing to the higher run rate. The company sees potential to increase annual Trio production by another 100,000 tons with modest additional investment beyond 2027.

Potash margins pressured by production mix

Potash segment sales fell to $31.3 million from $32.5 million as volumes declined to 59,000 tons from 62,000 tons. The average net realized price rose 3.4% to $394 per ton.

Potash production fell 17% in the quarter after Intrepid delayed the start of its Moab harvest to allow more evaporation in its ponds. Kim said the company expects to recover the delayed tons by year-end and anticipates the decision will support higher Moab production and lower unit costs in 2027.

Segment gross margin declined because production was weighted more heavily toward higher-cost sites. Tremblay said costs per ton were improving at the company’s HB and Wendover facilities, but their greater contribution to output made the improvement less visible in consolidated potash costs.

For 2027, Intrepid plans approximately $20 million in potash mine development to sustain annual production at levels 20,000 to 30,000 tons above prior years. The company expects returns of approximately 30% on that investment.

Cash deployment and proposed fertilizer project

Intrepid raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to approximately $45 million from $40 million. Crutchfield said some spending originally associated with next year’s initiatives would begin in 2026. He said an analyst’s estimate of roughly $80 million in 2027 capital spending was too high; the company plans to provide full-year guidance next quarter.

Year-to-date cash flow from continuing operations rose to $50.5 million from $37.3 million. Intrepid ended the quarter with $152.3 million in cash and cash equivalents, $9.1 million in short-term investments and no debt. Since its board approved a $50 million repurchase authorization in June, the company has bought approximately 88,000 shares for $3 million, Tremblay said.

Crutchfield also discussed Intrepid’s proposed sulfate of potash project near Carlsbad, New Mexico. The U.S. Department of Agriculture selected the project for approximately $139 million in proposed matching funding, and current plans call for annual capacity of roughly 220,000 tons. The project remains subject to completion of the award process, grant conditions and a final investment decision targeted for late 2027.

Market outlook

Vice President of Sales and Marketing Zach Adams said order books for potash and Trio were well subscribed heading into year-end, and management expects healthy fertilizer demand through the first half of 2027. Adams said Baltic port congestion affecting Russian and Belarusian exports could tighten potash supply if it persists, while sulfur supply constraints could support demand for Trio.

Adams attributed longer-term increases in Trio pricing partly to growing recognition of crops’ magnesium and sulfur needs and the product’s low chloride content. Crutchfield said Intrepid’s development partners also continue to work on the Wendover Lithium Project’s definitive feasibility study, which he said was expected by the first quarter.
