LANXESS Aktiengesellschaft ETR: LXS reported higher third-quarter sales and earnings, while refining its full-year outlook and warning that rising energy costs continue to weigh on its German operations.
Sales rose 10% in the quarter, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, reached EUR 139 million, Chairman of the Board of Management Matthias Zachert said during the company’s third-quarter 2026 press conference call. He said cash flow also improved, though he did not provide a figure on the call.
LANXESS expects full-year EBITDA of EUR 450 million to EUR 500 million and aims to finish near the upper end of that range. Zachert said the company would continue to prioritize cash flow in the fourth quarter, even if steps such as reducing inventories affected profitability.
Segment performance diverges
Specialty Additives delivered the strongest performance among the company’s three segments, with EBITDA increasing 58%. Zachert noted that acquisitions had expanded the segment this year and that it has a substantial U.S. footprint. He said U.S. operating conditions were more competitive than those in Europe, citing lower energy costs and bureaucracy.
Consumer Protection increased sales, aided by pricing, but EBITDA declined slightly from a year earlier. Zachert said the prior-year quarter included EUR 10 million in one-off effects and that the segment improved operationally when those effects were considered.
Advanced Intermediates increased sales by 7%, primarily through higher prices intended to offset energy costs. EBITDA nevertheless declined slightly. Zachert said the segment’s substantial German footprint left it exposed to rising energy costs in both the third and fourth quarters.
“We continue to be in heavy waters because the framework conditions and the local factors actually do not allow for a stronger business,” Zachert said of the segment.
Energy costs weigh on outlook
Zachert described the broader economic environment as tense, pointing to difficulties in construction and automotive markets. He said energy costs had risen substantially in recent months and were eroding EBITDA, despite a modest improvement in activity from a low level.
Asked why the upper end of guidance had been reduced by EUR 50 million, Zachert cited the energy price increase. His account of the earlier outlook was inconsistent: he also said the company had initially chosen a EUR 450 million to EUR 500 million range, the same range he presented on the call.
On net income, Zachert said LANXESS would continue working to improve its results but did not provide a timetable for returning to profit. He said consolidation of the company’s share in Envalior, a predominantly private equity-owned joint venture, weighed on net income because of depreciation, debt and interest costs. Net income would improve substantially if Envalior were no longer consolidated, he said.
Closures and consolidation
Asked whether further closures might be necessary, Zachert did not identify any planned closures. He said LANXESS continually reviews whether its operations are structurally viable and has worked to reduce costs over the past 12 to 18 months.
Zachert also criticized European regulatory requirements, saying additional directives were detrimental to competitiveness. He identified Saltigo, Inorganic Pigments and Advanced Industrial Intermediates as businesses facing difficult conditions in Germany.
Discussing industry consolidation, Zachert said mergers and other combinations were logical in the current environment because they could produce scale effects and synergies. LANXESS is focused on navigating the crisis and rebuilding its strength, he said, with a declared goal of eventually participating actively in consolidation.
New products and cash discipline
Alongside cost reductions and cash management, Zachert highlighted product development as a way to open new markets. Examples included Cosmelin, a biodegradable cosmetics ingredient; Rely+On, a disinfectant for hospitals and medical practices; and Addipave WM 23, which he said allows asphalt to be heated at a temperature 40 degrees lower in road construction.
He said LANXESS was concentrating on areas within its control, including costs, cash flow and innovation, while facing an economic environment it could not directly influence.
