Markel Group NYSE: MKL reported higher third-quarter adjusted operating income as improved insurance underwriting, growth in its non-insurance businesses and increased investment income offset unfavorable equity-market valuation changes.
Adjusted operating income increased 14% from a year earlier to $707 million, while adjusted operating income per share rose 15%, Chief Executive Officer Tom Gayner said. The company’s reported operating income, which includes unrealized investment gains and losses, declined to $383 million from $1 billion a year earlier, reflecting unrealized net investment losses of $281 million in the quarter compared with unrealized gains of $433 million in the prior-year period.
Net income attributable to common shareholders was $259 million, or $18.15 per diluted share, down from $751 million, or $59.25 per diluted share, a year earlier. Operating revenue, excluding net investment gains, rose 6% to $4.2 billion.
Insurance Results and Legacy Reserve Cover
Markel’s insurance operations continued to show underwriting improvement. Ongoing underwriting premiums grew 9%, while the combined ratio improved to 91.9%, including approximately three points of impact from the company’s Global Re runoff operation. A combined ratio below 100% generally indicates underwriting profitability.
Simon Wilson, co-president of Markel Group and CEO of Markel Insurance, said the company is selectively expanding where expected returns are attractive and reducing exposure in areas where they are not.
- U.S. Wholesale and Specialty premiums declined 3% as Markel reduced construction-related casualty business and remained selective in a softer property market. The segment’s combined ratio was 89.0%.
- International premiums increased 45%, led by marine, Structured Portfolio Solutions, and regional operations in Europe and Asia-Pacific. Its combined ratio was 89.9%.
- Programs and Solutions improved its combined ratio to 87.0% from 94.2% a year earlier.
The company’s three ongoing insurance divisions released $445 million of reserves through the first nine months of 2026, compared with $397 million in the comparable 2025 period. Reserve releases included first-party lines such as property, inland marine and personal lines, as well as workers’ compensation, according to Chief Financial Officer Brian Costanzo.
Markel also announced an agreement with Enstar to provide adverse development protection for legacy exposures in Global Re and certain exited lines. The transaction covers $4.8 billion of reserves, with Markel transferring $2.25 billion to Enstar while retaining the remainder for runoff. The agreement includes $1.2 billion of adverse-development protection above covered reserves, for which Markel will pay a $120 million risk premium.
Costanzo said the arrangement is expected to be relatively neutral to fourth-quarter results because the risk premium will be offset by the release of additional management margin. He estimated that Markel would forgo investment income associated with the transferred reserves, using a pretax yield of roughly 4% on the $2.25 billion as a proxy. The company did not provide 2027 earnings-per-share guidance related to the transaction.
Gayner said the principal rationale for the agreement was to reduce uncertainty around legacy reserves rather than accelerate capital deployment. Costanzo estimated the transaction could release “a little under half a billion” of capital over time, though he said the company views the capital as available for redeployment into growth opportunities in its ongoing insurance divisions.
Market Conditions Remain Mixed
Wilson said Markel is facing softer conditions in property insurance and selected casualty markets. He cited challenging pricing and claims trends in construction liability, trucking, habitational business and excess casualty, while noting Markel has limited exposure to trucking and habitational lines.
Markel has actively reduced construction-casualty exposure, Wilson said, because premiums and rate increases have not matched rising claims trends. The company is instead emphasizing areas where it believes it has underwriting expertise, including environmental and healthcare risks, as well as smaller and medium-sized accounts.
Property pricing in Markel’s book has declined by roughly 25% to 30% this year, Wilson said. He estimated property represents about 40% of the company’s overall insurance book when including property written through its binding operations. While he said the market still offers profit opportunities, margins have narrowed materially from levels seen several years ago.
Markel’s Global Re operation experienced adverse development tied to transaction liability claims that emerged over the previous three to six months, Costanzo said. The Enstar agreement is intended to remove much of the uncertainty related to that runoff business as Markel enters 2027.
Ventures Growth and Investment Income
Markel’s industrial, financial, and consumer and other businesses collectively increased revenue 10% and adjusted operating income 35% in the quarter.
Industrial revenue rose 13% and adjusted operating income increased 29%. Andrew Crowley, co-president of Markel Group and CEO of Markel Ventures, said growth was led by precast concrete and fire-and-life-safety businesses, which have invested in facilities, personnel and selective acquisitions to serve demand related to data centers and other commercial and industrial infrastructure.
Financial segment revenue increased 13% and adjusted operating income rose 30%, driven primarily by the insurance-linked securities business and additional strength in lender services. Consumer and other revenue increased 2%, while adjusted operating income rose 80%. Crowley noted that the segment’s percentage comparisons can be volatile because ornamental plant sales are heavily weighted toward the second quarter.
Net investment income increased 5% in the third quarter to $258 million and rose 8% year to date to $770 million, as higher interest rates supported cash flow from the company’s investment portfolio. Markel ended the quarter with a $13.1 billion equity portfolio, including $9 billion of cumulative pretax unrealized gains.
Higher interest rates reduced the market value of Markel’s bond portfolio, producing an after-tax other comprehensive loss of $416 million in the quarter. Costanzo said the company expects bonds to move toward par as they mature and is investing new insurance float and bond-maturity proceeds at higher current yields.
Share Repurchases Continue
Markel repurchased $315 million of its shares during the third quarter and $685 million year to date. Gayner said the company bought back more than 1% of its outstanding shares during the quarter and has reduced its total share count by more than 10% over the past five years.
Gayner said Markel believes its shares have been repurchased at discounts to intrinsic value and that the company expects to continue buybacks. “Markel stock seems to be at the top of the list,” he said when discussing capital-allocation opportunities.
The company also disclosed $9 million of bolt-on acquisitions during the quarter and said it was a net seller of $75 million in public equities. Markel ended the quarter with $3.6 billion in invested assets at the holding company.
