Headquartered in Oklahoma City, American Energy Partners was founded in 2013 by Aubrey McClendon, the former co-chief executive officer of Chesapeake Energy Corporation. Under McClendon’s leadership, the company assembled a diversified portfolio of acreage positions across several key U.S. shale plays. In early 2016, the firm filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection amid a prolonged commodity downturn and subsequently sold or restructured many of its assets.

Through regionally focused subsidiaries, American Energy Partners has held positions in the Permian Basin, Haynesville Shale, Eagle Ford Shale and Appalachia’s Utica Shale. These operations span Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and parts of Ohio and Pennsylvania. While many of its original assets were divested during restructuring, the company’s legacy includes the development of several large-scale unconventional projects and the establishment of a complementary midstream network.
