Company Overview

Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. was a U.S.-based coal producer engaged in the exploration, mining, processing and sale of thermal and metallurgical coal. Its thermal coal was used primarily for electricity generation, while metallurgical coal was supplied to steel producers. The company also operated coal preparation and transportation facilities that supported the movement of its products to domestic and international customers.

Historically, Alpha operated a broad portfolio of mines in the Central Appalachian and Northern Appalachian regions, as well as in the Powder River Basin. Its customers included electric utilities, steelmakers and industrial companies. In 2011, Alpha expanded significantly through its acquisition of Massey Energy, adding mines and reserves in the Appalachian coal-producing region.

Alpha Natural Resources filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2015 amid challenging coal-market conditions and subsequently emerged from bankruptcy in 2016. As part of its restructuring, many of the company’s operating assets were transferred to Contura Energy, while Alpha’s original corporate structure was substantially reorganized. Because of these changes, historical descriptions of Alpha’s operations may refer to assets that are no longer held under the Alpha Natural Resources name.
