Marine Harvest served customers in markets across Europe, North America and Asia. Its principal farming operations historically included Norway, Scotland, Canada, Chile, Ireland and the Faroe Islands, although its geographic footprint and business structure changed over time through acquisitions and divestitures.

The company traces its origins to the 1960s and became one of the world's largest salmon-farming businesses. In 2018, Marine Harvest announced that it would change its name to Mowi ASA, adopting the name associated with its historical Norwegian operations. The company was led by Chief Executive Officer Alf-Helge Aarskog during much of the 2010s; Ivan Vindheim became CEO of Mowi in 2019.
