Company Overview

Newcrest Mining Limited was an Australia-based mining company focused on the exploration, development and operation of gold and copper-gold mines. Its activities included mine production, mineral processing, exploration and resource evaluation, with gold serving as its primary product and copper produced as an important by-product at certain operations.

Before being acquired, Newcrest operated a portfolio of mines and projects across Australia, Canada and Papua New Guinea, and held interests in development or exploration assets in other jurisdictions. Its principal operations included the Cadia gold-copper mine in New South Wales, the Lihir gold mine in Papua New Guinea, the Brucejack and Red Chris mines in Canada, and the Fruta del Norte project in Ecuador through an ownership interest.

Newcrest was established in 1990 through the combination of Newmont Australia Limited and BHP Gold Mines Limited and grew into one of the world's larger gold producers. The company was led by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Sandeep Biswas from 2014 until his departure in 2023. Newcrest was acquired by Newmont Corporation in October 2023, after which it ceased operating as an independent publicly traded company; NCMGY was its historical American depositary receipt symbol.
