Birkenstock NYSE: BIRK has been making podiatrist-approved sandals feel like a luxury accessory for years.

Sales keep rising, the company just raised its outlook, and a well-known contrarian investor has disclosed a sizable stake. Yet the stock has slid this year and is hovering just above its lows.

Investors looking at a strong business and a weak stock need to balance the company’s growth engine against tariff and currency headwinds, a more cautious consumer, rising inventory, and a share price that repeatedly fails to hold its rallies.

Revenue and Earnings Show Growth

The fiscal third-quarter report on Aug. 13 was solid. The London-based company said revenue rose 13.3% to about $835 million. Direct-to-consumer sales grew 14%, slightly faster than wholesale.

The Americas remained the largest destination for its products, representing about 48% of overall sales. The Asia-Pacific region was the standout in terms of growth with a 23% increase in constant currency.

In all, adjusted earnings per share jumped 19% to 86 cents in the quarter, though the per-share result missed analyst estimates by 2 cents.

Birkenstock Raises Full-Year Outlook

Management then raised the full-year forecast. Birkenstock now expects fiscal 2026 revenue growth of 15% at constant currency. Birkenstock earnings are expected to increase nearly 22% next year from $2.19 per share in fiscal 2025 to about $2.67 per share. In other words, this is a growth story that has not slowed.

Profit margins are more nuanced. Margins slipped slightly from a year earlier, and management blamed new U.S. tariffs and currency swings for the decline. Excluding those two items, gross margin would have risen slightly, maintaining impressive margins for a footwear company.

Store Expansion and New Styles

The company is also making a strategic push beyond the Boston clog.

Birkenstock kept opening company-owned stores, with about 140 targeted by the end of fiscal 2026, and sales through its own stores grew sharply. Closed-toe styles beyond the Boston also grew strongly. That diversification helped reduce dependence on its one blockbuster shoe.

Other recent news has been mostly positive. A Dutch court ruled in late September that retailer Lidl must stop selling sandals that copy five Birkenstock designs, with daily fines for non-compliance. Investor Michael Burry also disclosed in early September that he held a 5.2% stake in the company.

This news came on top of the company announcing in May that it was launching a $250 million share repurchase program to take advantage of “a strong disconnect between our share price and the strength of our underlying fundamentals,” the company’s CEO said.

Analysts currently rate the stock a Moderate Buy and for good reason, based on their expectations. At a current price of about $34 per share, BIRK has fallen about 17% this year and sits approximately $4 above its 52-week low. The stock is up nearly 10% over the past month.

Based on the consensus 52-week price target, though, analysts see healthy upside, with the current target at $52.50 per share. The highest price target sits at $76 per share, while the lowest is $35.

Of the 19 analysts tracking the stock, 13 list it as a Buy, while six rate it a Hold.

On valuation, the shares trade at a multiple of about 15 to 16 for both trailing and forward earnings, a relatively modest level for a business growing revenue in the mid-teens. Whether the shares are placed under value stocks or growth stocks, then, is up to the investor. It does not pay a dividend, so it will not appear on lists of dividend stocks.

Tariffs and Inventory Pose Risks

Lingering concerns over tariffs and currency, however, continue to press on the stock. The company said the impact of those cut 130 basis points of its margin in the recent quarter and will cost a meaningful amount of margin this fiscal year. Birkenstock said it expects a stronger euro to trim reported revenue growth.

Inventory is also building relative to sales. Management admits retailers face a more constrained consumer and more markdowns.

There are also two more cautions to consider. The fiscal 2026 tax rate guidance moved higher, so better EBITDA did not translate into higher adjusted earnings per share guidance. Middle East disruptions could also cost an estimated high single-digit millions of euros in the second half.

In addition, competition never relaxes, and other luxury brands are also stumbling. Although differentiated from other types of footwear, products from Crocs NASDAQ: CROX, Deckers Outdoor NYSE: DECK, Steve Madden NASDAQ: SHOO, and Wolverine World Wide NYSE: WWW remain powerful consumer alternatives.

Growth Leads to Stock Appeal

Overall, Birkenstock, in many ways, is the kind of business investors might dream of owning. It has mid-teens growth, strong margins, and a brand that commands full-price sales. After this year's slide, the risk-reward looks better than it did a year ago.

The company is also buying back shares and expanding stores while consumer brands are under pressure from tariffs, debt, and shrinking margins.

The stock, however, has repeatedly failed to hold rallies, and tariffs, a wary consumer, and rising inventory could cap the upside.

Investors who are seeking income should look elsewhere. But for those attracted to real brand power and who can be patient, Birkenstock shares are ones to consider taking for a walk.
