Its principal brands include 1&1, which offers fixed-line and mobile communications services; IONOS, which provides hosting, cloud infrastructure, domains, and online business solutions; and GMX and WEB.DE, which provide email, messaging, and related internet services. United Internet also operates its own telecommunications network in Germany while using partner networks and wholesale arrangements to support portions of its service offerings.
Founded in 1988 by Ralph Dommermuth, United Internet has expanded from an internet access provider into a group serving private customers, small and medium-sized businesses, and larger enterprises. The company is headquartered in Montabaur, Germany, and its services are available primarily in Germany and other European markets, with IONOS serving customers internationally. Ralph Dommermuth continues to lead the company as its chief executive officer.
