Key Points

  • IperionX completed construction of its Virginia titanium powder production capacity, with final drying work underway, and demonstrated a production rate exceeding 200 tons annually through its HAMR furnace. The company is shifting from inventory accumulation to customer validation, prototype production and repeat commercial orders.
  • The company is targeting defense applications including fasteners, ballistic plate, naval components and pump impellers, supported by an additional $18.5 million U.S. Army task order and more than $70 million remaining under its Phase III contract. Customer qualification and testing could lead to additional orders, although timing remains uncertain.
  • IperionX reported $63 million in cash and approximately $33 million-$34 million in unobligated expansion funding, while advancing its GenX process and plans to scale toward thousands of tons of capacity. It is also positioning its Titan project and Atlas-Titan acquisition as part of a domestic U.S. titanium supply chain.

IperionX NASDAQ: IPX said it has completed construction of its titanium powder production capacity in Virginia, with final drying-related work still underway, and is shifting its focus toward converting powder inventory into finished products and repeat customer orders.

During an investor update following its latest quarterly results, the company said it held 19 tons of titanium powder inventory and had demonstrated a production run rate of more than 200 tons per year through its HAMR deoxidation furnace. IperionX said it had previously faced limitations in customer engagement when its annual finished-powder output was below one ton.

The company said its immediate objective is to use its current inventory and installed manufacturing platform to support customer validation, prototype production and, ultimately, recurring commercial orders. It said it has four products targeted at the defense industrial base, including fasteners, ballistic plate and naval components.

Defense Programs and Funding

IperionX said it received an additional $18.5 million task order from the U.S. Army during the quarter. The company said more than $70 million remains available under its SBIR Phase III IDIQ contract, which has a $99 million ceiling.

The company characterized the task order as an indication of continued support from the U.S. Army and said its titanium products are being developed for direct use by the U.S. defense sector, including Army and Navy programs. IperionX said it is producing titanium plate under U.S. Navy funding and has manufactured pump impellers for Carver Pump that are undergoing testing.

The company said it expects the Carver Pump testing to lead to additional customer orders in the coming months, though it noted that the timing of customer qualification processes is outside its control.

IperionX also said it has fastener projects underway and is working to develop titanium components for military use. It said its process could improve material yields substantially compared with conventional titanium production routes. In the example of a titanium fastener, the company said conventional manufacturing can have a yield below 10% from ingot through finished product, while its powder-based approach could produce yields above 95%.

Technology Scale-Up and GenX Process

The company said it validated a 200-ton-per-year production rate through back-to-back runs totaling 1.6 tons over roughly 60 hours. It also said it has demonstrated its GenX process at an annualized scale of more than 100 tons and plans to bring that capacity into its production line in the coming months.

According to IperionX, the GenX process is expected to reduce power consumption by 75% and reagent consumption by 50% compared with its earlier process. The company also said GenX is expected to lower labor intensity, capital intensity and operating costs while improving product quality.

IperionX said it is consistently producing Grade 5 titanium powder from its HAMR furnace, while spherical powder has reached Grade 23. The company said its GenX runs have also produced Grade 23 material.

To support conversion of powder into components, IperionX said it installed a SACMI press for forming parts, including bolts, gears and nuts. It also said it now has three large-scale HSPT sintering furnaces installed, with two operating and the third being commissioned.

Customer Qualification Focus

The company said it is now prioritizing product shipments and customer qualification rather than building additional powder inventory. It said that 15.9 tons of material moved through its HAMR deoxidation furnace during the latest quarter, compared with 5.1 tons in the June quarter. The material still requires processing steps including drying, quality assurance and quality control before entering finished inventory, IperionX said.

IperionX identified engineered products, titanium powders and mill products as its principal product categories. It said engineered products such as military fasteners, track pins, pump impellers and automotive components can require substantial qualification work but could support long-term customer relationships once included in customer programs.

The company also cited defense-sector interest in titanium powders for additive manufacturing, including potential applications involving missile supply chains. It said it is pursuing mill-product opportunities and expects progress on some engagements in coming months.

Liquidity and U.S. Supply Chain Plans

IperionX said it had $63 million in cash, along with approximately $33 million to $34 million in unobligated IBAS funding for its expansion program. It said its installed and planned capacity is intended to support growth toward thousands of tons of titanium product capacity over the next 12 to 24 months.

The company said it believes domestic titanium supply-chain development is increasingly important because the United States has no domestic titanium sponge capacity, while China and Russia control more than 80% of global titanium sponge supply. IperionX said its Titan project, together with the Atlas-Titan acquisition, is intended to provide a permitted, construction-ready source of titanium minerals and other materials including rare earths, zirconium and hafnium.

Finally, IperionX said it continues to work toward redomiciling to the United States. The company said it expects to provide further information, including timing and scheme materials, when ready.
