Corebridge Financial NYSE: CRBG reported third-quarter 2026 operating earnings per share of $1.22, up 27% from a year earlier, as the insurer cited growth across its retirement, life insurance and institutional businesses. Adjusted pre-tax operating income rose 4% year over year to $677 million, while adjusted return on average equity increased 180 basis points to 12.1%.

President and Chief Executive Officer Marc Costantini said the company returned $295 million to shareholders through dividends and repurchases during the quarter. He attributed the results to Corebridge's diversified operations, product distribution and favorable demand trends in retirement income, protection and institutional insurance markets.

“Our results demonstrate the strength of our diversified business model, disciplined execution, and ability to capitalize on the powerful market trends shaping our industry,” Costantini said.

Retirement Sales and Net Flows Improve

Individual retirement sales reached $4.5 billion in the third quarter, increasing 17% sequentially and marking the company's strongest quarter of the year. Corebridge reported more than $1 billion of positive net flows in the business and said preliminary LIMRA data indicated market-share gains in both fixed annuities and registered index-linked annuities, or RILAs.

Costantini said the company expects sales momentum to continue through year-end, citing a “very robust October” in its annuity business. During the quarter, Corebridge introduced Progressive Trigger, an index-annuity crediting strategy intended to preserve future growth potential after a down market year.

Interim Chief Financial Officer and Chief Accounting Officer Chris Filiaggi said individual retirement adjusted pre-tax operating income totaled $429 million, down 4% from the prior-year period. The decline reflected higher deferred acquisition cost, or DAC, amortization associated with business growth, higher interest rates and the continuing effect of assumption updates.

Filiaggi reiterated Corebridge's full-year expectation for $2.55 billion of individual retirement base spread income. The company expects spreads to bottom by the end of 2026 before improving as higher reinvestment yields earn into the portfolio.

Management also addressed surrender activity, saying higher rates can contribute to increased surrenders over time, particularly as policies leave their surrender-charge periods. However, Costantini said net flows remain strong and the company has not observed activity outside its expectations.

Group Retirement Shifts Toward Fee Income

In group retirement, fee income increased 5% year over year, or $10 million, driven by growth in advisory and fee-based assets. Advisory and brokerage assets increased 12% from a year earlier, according to Costantini.

Wealth-management sales set a record during the quarter and accounted for more than half of group retirement sales, Filiaggi said. Group retirement net outflows totaled $2 billion, improving both sequentially and year over year, aided by the absence of large plan surrenders. The company expects fourth-quarter outflows to rise because of seasonal required minimum distributions.

Group retirement adjusted pre-tax operating income was $142 million, down 12% from a year earlier, due to lower spread income and higher acquisition-cost amortization, partly offset by fee growth. Filiaggi said fee income now represents more than 60% of earnings in the segment as the business transitions from a largely spread-based model to a more capital-light, fee-based model.

Life insurance sales were $840 million, while underwriting margin totaled $329 million, supported by favorable mortality experience. Corebridge said mortality experience has been favorable for 10 consecutive quarters. Life adjusted pre-tax operating income was flat year over year at $109 million, as improved underwriting was offset by higher operating expenses.

Institutional Markets Pipeline Builds

Institutional markets sales totaled $1.7 billion, including $1.5 billion of guaranteed investment contract issuance. Pension risk transfer, or PRT, sales were $156 million during the quarter.

While management characterized quarterly PRT volume as modest, Costantini said Corebridge has been selected as counterparty for more than $1.5 billion of PRT transactions expected to close in the fourth quarter. The company cited a robust pipeline in both U.S. and U.K. markets, with activity expected to be weighted toward the second half of the year.

Institutional markets adjusted pre-tax operating income rose 5% year over year to $107 million, reflecting higher base spread income and favorable underwriting margins. Segment reserves increased 10% and assets under management and administration rose 5% from the prior-year period.

Investment Portfolio and Capital Position

Corebridge said approximately 96% of its investment assets were investment grade. New-money yields were 6.1% in the quarter, exceeding portfolio roll-off yields of 5.7%, according to Costantini. The company also said it has continued reducing selected below-investment-grade exposures where it sees opportunities to de-risk without sacrificing returns.

Filiaggi said holding-company liquidity ended the quarter at $2.2 billion, including $750 million of pre-funded debt due in April 2027. Insurance subsidiaries paid $475 million of dividends to the holding company during the quarter. Corebridge's year-to-date capital payout ratio was approximately 74%, excluding variable annuity reinsurance proceeds.

The company reported variable investment income $29 million above its long-term assumption, aided by elevated initial public offering activity and favorable marks on selected investments. Corebridge expects fourth-quarter variable investment income to exceed first-half levels but remain below the third-quarter result.

Management also provided detail on digital infrastructure investments. Filiaggi said about 95% of the company's asset-backed securities data-center exposure supports traditional cloud and enterprise applications, with a smaller portion linked to AI-specific demand. Roughly $3.4 billion of the overall digital infrastructure portfolio is expected to roll off during the next three years.

Equitable Merger Progresses Toward Targeted Year-End Close

Corebridge said it has received all required federal approvals for its planned merger with Equitable and continues to work on remaining state and international approvals. Costantini said discussions with regulators remain constructive and the company continues to target a year-end closing.

The company has identified more than $100 million in annualized expense savings expected to be realized in the first half of 2027. Corebridge continues to target $150 million of expense synergies in 2027 and at least $500 million of run-rate expense savings by the end of 2028.

Costantini said the combined company is expected to serve about 10 million customers at closing and become the leading U.S. life and annuity company by operating earnings. Corebridge plans to provide additional details on its strategy, revenue opportunities and integration plans at an investor day scheduled for the second quarter of 2027.
