Douglas Dynamics NYSE: PLOW reported record third-quarter results for 2026, led by robust preseason demand for snow and ice-control equipment, unusually strong parts and accessories sales, and continued municipal-market strength in its Work Truck Solutions segment.
President and CEO Mark Van Genderen said the company had already achieved the highest adjusted earnings in its history with one quarter remaining in the year. He credited employees and the company’s dealer network for supporting higher production and shipments ahead of the winter season.
“Work Truck Attachments generated record third-quarter results” through a combination of strong preseason demand and operational execution, Van Genderen said. Work Truck Solutions also produced record quarterly revenue, supported by ongoing demand from municipal customers.
Record Sales, EBITDA and Earnings
Consolidated third-quarter net sales rose 35% year over year to a record $218 million. Gross profit increased 57% to $59.8 million, while adjusted EBITDA climbed 89% to a record $37.9 million. The adjusted EBITDA margin expanded by 500 basis points to 17.4%.
Adjusted diluted earnings per share reached a record $0.98, up 145% from the prior-year quarter.
SG&A expenses increased 19% to $28.6 million. CFO Sarah Lauber said the increase reflected higher stock- and incentive-based compensation tied to earnings growth, legal costs, wages and headcount—including employees added through the Venco Venturo acquisition—and rent expenses.
Lauber said the company had surpassed the midpoint of its original full-year adjusted EPS guidance issued in February and had already exceeded its prior annual adjusted EPS record, set in 2019.
Attachments Segment Posts Sharp Growth
Work Truck Attachments generated record third-quarter sales of $121.5 million, a 78% increase from a year earlier. The segment’s adjusted EBITDA rose 188% to $30.1 million, while its adjusted EBITDA margin increased 940 basis points to 24.8%.
The segment benefited from preseason demand for equipment, the addition of Venco Venturo, and continued elevated sales of parts and accessories. Lauber said year-to-date parts and accessories shipments had already exceeded the company’s prior annual record established in 2025.
Van Genderen said dealer inventories had been substantially lower earlier in the year than in recent periods and that orders likely helped replenish dealer stock of snow and ice-control equipment. The company plans to build more finished-goods inventory than last year to support potential winter-season demand.
Douglas Dynamics expects continued opportunities in the segment, including growing traction for its pusher-plow line. The company also plans to begin taking orders in 2027 for a sidewalk machine developed with John Deere, which it showcased at the Equip Expo in Louisville, Kentucky.
Management cautioned, however, that the record parts and accessories performance may not repeat next year. Lauber said she would not expect the same level of parts and accessories sales in 2027 based on current conditions.
Municipal Demand Supports Solutions Results
Work Truck Solutions posted record quarterly revenue of $96.5 million, up 3% from the prior-year record of $94 million. Adjusted EBITDA was $7.8 million, below the prior-year quarter but still described by management as healthy.
The segment continued to benefit from municipal demand, helping offset uneven commercial demand. Van Genderen said commercial customers remain measured in their purchasing activity, though the company has begun to see an increase in smaller fleet orders that could support next year.
Management said the company has aligned costs with current commercial-market conditions while maintaining flexibility to respond if demand improves. The overall Solutions backlog remains above historic norms, according to Lauber.
Douglas Dynamics is also making targeted investments in capacity and efficiency. Its new Missouri facility is operating and contributing to expanded capabilities, while a new logistics facility in Manchester, Iowa, remains on track to open before year-end. The company is also relocating its Ohio upfit center to a larger, purpose-designed site.
Van Genderen said these projects are intended to improve capacity, workflow, lead times and delivery reliability. He also cited the company’s U.S.-centric operating model as a competitive advantage with municipal customers.
Guidance Raised Again
Following its performance through the first nine months and its visibility into the fourth quarter, Douglas Dynamics raised the lower ends of its full-year outlook ranges. The company now expects:
- Net sales of $770 million to $805 million, compared with a prior range whose lower end was $5 million lower.
- Adjusted EBITDA of $123 million to $135 million, with the lower end raised by $3 million.
- Adjusted earnings per share of $3.00 to $3.40, with the lower end increased by $0.10.
- An effective tax rate of approximately 24% to 25%.
The outlook assumes average snowfall in the fourth quarter. Lauber noted that winter weather can create meaningful variability in the Attachments segment, as an early and severe start to winter can increase reorders of equipment and parts, while milder conditions can have the opposite effect.
Management said that, assuming average snowfall, it sees a path to replicate anticipated 2026 performance in 2027. Van Genderen said the company does not view 2026 as necessarily being a high-water mark, though he emphasized that snowfall remains a key variable.
Cash Flow, Liquidity and Capital Allocation
Year-to-date net cash used in operating activities increased $26.3 million to $47.5 million, while free cash flow declined about $29.4 million to negative $58.7 million. Lauber attributed the change primarily to increased receivables from higher sales and higher inventory required to support demand.
At Sept. 30, the company had total liquidity of $34 million, including $5.5 million in cash and $28.5 million of revolver availability. Year-to-date capital expenditures rose $3.1 million to $11.2 million, and the company expects full-year capital spending to remain within its traditional range of 2% to 3% of net sales.
Douglas Dynamics returned more than $27 million to shareholders year to date through dividends and share repurchases, according to Lauber. Management said its capital-allocation priorities remain unchanged while it continues to evaluate acquisition opportunities under its Activate strategic initiative.
