Mplx NYSE: MPLX reported third-quarter adjusted EBITDA of $1.9 billion, up 5% from the same period in 2025, as increased volumes and higher rates supported results across its logistics and natural gas businesses. Excluding the impact of its late-2025 Rockies divestiture, adjusted EBITDA would have increased 7.3% year over year, President and CEO Maryann Mannen said during the partnership’s third-quarter earnings call.
The partnership also increased its quarterly distribution by 12.5%, marking the third consecutive year of a 12.5% increase and the fifth straight year of double-digit distribution growth. The annualized distribution rate is now $4.84 per unit. Mannen said the increase reflects MPLX’s confidence in the durability of its cash flows, its project pipeline and its capital-return strategy.
MPLX returned approximately $1.1 billion to unitholders during the quarter. Management said it remains comfortable maintaining annual distribution coverage of 1.3 times, though Mannen acknowledged that the loss of EBITDA associated with a newly announced asset sale could affect the pace of next year’s distribution growth.
Asset Sale Creates 2027 Headwind, Funds Growth Plans
Alongside Marathon Petroleum’s planned sale of its St. Paul Park and Mandan refineries, MPLX agreed to divest midstream assets supporting those facilities for $750 million. The transaction represents an EBITDA multiple of about nine times, according to Mannen.
The company said it expects to redeploy the proceeds toward growth initiatives focused on the Permian and Marcellus basins. Mannen described the sale as a headwind to 2027 that had not been contemplated when the company established other operating targets. Still, she said MPLX believes it can maintain mid-single-digit EBITDA growth and expects a “significant” distribution increase in 2027 that will exceed distributable cash flow growth.
Chief Financial Officer Kris Hagedorn said the asset sale is not expected to impair MPLX’s ability to deliver mid-single-digit growth. Management expects 2027 EBITDA growth to be stronger than 2026, despite the divestiture, as new projects begin contributing more meaningfully to earnings.
Mannen said the partnership will seek to deploy the sale proceeds into organic or inorganic opportunities that meet its strategic and return criteria. She said MPLX remains focused on projects that support its wellhead-to-water strategy, expand its Permian footprint and build its natural gas and NGL businesses.
Natural Gas and NGL Investments Drive Expansion
MPLX is directing more than 90% of its $2.9 billion 2026 organic growth capital program toward natural gas and NGL infrastructure. The company cited growing producer activity, natural gas-fired power demand and expanded global market access as supportive factors for further investment.
During the quarter, the Harmon Creek III complex entered service with 300 million cubic feet per day of gas-processing capacity and 40,000 barrels per day of de-ethanization capacity. The project lifted MPLX’s Northeast processing capacity to 8.1 billion cubic feet per day and fractionation capacity to 800,000 barrels per day.
In the Permian Basin, MPLX and its joint venture partners reached a final investment decision on the Solitude Pipeline System, which is expected to add 4.5 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas egress capacity when it enters service in late 2029. The project advanced from commercial development to final investment decision in less than 90 days, supported by long-term shipper commitments, Mannen said.
Solitude will increase MPLX’s interest in Permian long-haul natural gas pipeline capacity from 11 billion cubic feet per day to about 16 billion cubic feet per day. Chief Strategy Officer Dave Heppner said MPLX continues to see strong customer demand for long-haul capacity serving Gulf Coast markets, including LNG-related demand.
- The Bay Runner Pipeline is expected to enter service in the fourth quarter, adding access to Gulf Coast LNG export infrastructure.
- The BANGL Pipeline expansion is expected to increase capacity from 250,000 barrels per day to 300,000 barrels per day in the fourth quarter.
- Blackcomb Natural Gas Pipeline began commissioning in July and is expected to reach full commercial service in the fourth quarter.
- The Titan Complex is expected to expand sour-gas treating capacity above 400 million cubic feet per day by year-end.
- MPLX expects its first 150,000-barrel-per-day Gulf Coast fractionator, associated purity pipeline and 400,000-barrel-per-day joint-venture LPG export facility to enter service in the first half of 2028.
Segment Results and Volume Growth
Adjusted EBITDA in MPLX’s crude oil and products logistics segment increased $67 million from the third quarter of 2025. Hagedorn said higher rates across the business and increased butane blending drove the improvement, partly offset by higher operating expenses, including incentive compensation. Terminal throughput rose 6% year over year, primarily on higher export volumes.
Natural gas and NGL services segment adjusted EBITDA rose $26 million year over year. Excluding the impact of the Rockies divestiture, segment EBITDA increased 10%. Gathering volumes climbed 14%, while processing volumes increased 5%, driven by activity in the Utica, Marcellus and Permian basins.
Utica gathering and processing volumes rose 19% and 20%, respectively, from a year earlier. MPLX’s Northeast processing system operated at 93% utilization during the quarter, while Utica processing utilization increased to 89% from 73% in the second quarter.
Hagedorn said incentive compensation expense totaled $77 million during the third quarter, up $37 million from a year earlier. Year-to-date expense was $167 million, or $48 million above the comparable 2025 period, reducing adjusted EBITDA growth by about 1% for the year. The expense is tied in part to employee compensation programs linked to financial metrics and Marathon Petroleum’s share-price performance.
Management said fourth-quarter growth should exceed third-quarter growth as recently completed projects ramp. Titan 2 is expected to be completed by year-end, with its ramp toward full capacity occurring in 2027.
