TriNet Group NYSE: TNET said third-quarter results reflected improving insurance performance, a recovery in customer retention and a return to new-sales growth, while lower worksite employee volumes continued to weigh on revenue.

Total revenue was $1.2 billion in the third quarter, down 5% from a year earlier. Chief Financial Officer Mala Murthy said the decline primarily reflected lower worksite employee, or WSE, volumes following the company’s health-plan repricing, partly offset by pricing in insurance and professional services.

TriNet ended the quarter with about 295,000 total WSEs, down 11% year over year. That figure includes platform users and co-employed WSEs receiving the company’s full professional employer organization services. Co-employed WSEs totaled about 269,000 at quarter-end, also down 11% from the prior year.

Insurance Results Improve as Repricing Takes Hold

President and Chief Executive Officer Mike Simonds said TriNet entered 2026 focused on three priorities: bringing its insurance cost ratio into a sustainable range through health-fee repricing, improving client retention and increasing new sales.

“After completing our repricing efforts, insurance performance has improved, and once again in Q3, it was better than forecast and within our target ICR range,” Simonds said.

Insurance service revenue declined 4% year over year, while insurance costs fell 5%. The company’s insurance cost ratio, or ICR, was 89% for the third quarter, improving one percentage point from a year earlier and landing within TriNet’s target range.

Murthy said health-cost trends remained in the high single digits, consistent with broader market trends. Pharmaceutical cost trends remained below forecast during the quarter but rose from first-half levels, while medical costs benefited from inpatient procedures coming in below expectations. She cautioned that TriNet does not view the lower pharmaceutical inflation this year as a change in the longer-term trend, citing the likely future introduction of high-cost drugs.

The company expects the fourth quarter to be its seasonally highest ICR period because pooling-limit deductibles reset and WSEs have largely exhausted deductibles by that point in the year. Murthy also said TriNet’s fourth-quarter outlook includes an allowance for possible claims volatility.

Retention Recovers, Sales Growth Accelerates

Simonds said customer retention was initially pressured by health-plan repricing, particularly during first-quarter renewals. However, with second- and third-quarter renewals complete and fourth-quarter renewals largely finished, TriNet now expects to deliver a modest improvement in full-year retention.

Murthy said healthcare pricing cited as a reason for customer attrition declined both as a share of attrition and in absolute terms. Simonds added that TriNet’s long-term historical retention average is around 80%, and management expects retention to improve beyond that level over the medium term as it invests in service and additional client capabilities.

New sales annual contract value rose by a mid-single-digit percentage year over year in the third quarter. Simonds said the company is forecasting high-single-digit new-sales ACV growth in the fourth quarter, supported by its direct sales force and broker channel.

The company said its Ascend program is intended to develop new sales consultants, with the first two cohorts contributing to more than 10% growth in sales consultants in the market during the selling season. More than 110 Ascend participants were in-house, according to Simonds. Broker-originated new sales ACV was also a strong contributor during the quarter.

While management did not provide a 2027 WSE-growth forecast, Simonds said the company sees improving momentum in both retention and sales. He said the timing of a return to WSE growth remains uncertain.

Technology and New Offerings Support Client Strategy

TriNet highlighted investments in artificial intelligence, service and adjacent offerings designed to improve the customer experience and deepen client relationships.

At the end of the third quarter, nearly 60% of WSE-initiated chats were resolved through the company’s TriNet Assistant AI tool, Simonds said. The company’s backlog of older cases declined by more than 60%, while leave-of-absence turnaround times dropped 75%.

During the quarter, TriNet expanded TriNet Assistant to customer administrators. The company also continued integrating Cocoon, its leave-of-absence solution, with the first customer cohort migrated, including clients with the heaviest leave usage.

TriNet also pointed to partnerships and recently launched offerings, including TriNet Global for international employment needs, TriNet IT for remote-workforce technology, TriNet Recruit for applicant tracking and TriNet Spend for expense management.

Profitability, Cash Flow and Outlook

Third-quarter professional services revenue was $157 million, down 7% year over year and in line with TriNet’s forecast. Interest revenue fell 24% to $13 million, largely due to lower cash balances tied to certain tax credits, though higher-than-expected interest rates contributed to a modest outperformance relative to the company’s expectations.

Operating expenses excluding insurance costs and interest expense increased 2%, reflecting Cocoon-related costs and strategic investments. TriNet reported GAAP earnings per diluted share of $0.65 and adjusted net income per diluted share of $0.94.

Adjusted EBITDA was $89 million, representing a 7.6% margin. Net cash provided by operating activities rose 11% to $80 million, while free cash flow totaled $53 million. The company returned $33 million to shareholders through repurchases and dividends, including $19 million used to repurchase approximately 281,000 shares and a quarterly dividend of $0.29 per share.

TriNet left its full-year outlook unchanged. It expects total revenue of $4.75 billion to $4.9 billion and said revenue is trending toward the lower end of that range because of the first-quarter WSE impact from repricing. Professional services revenue is expected to trend toward the high end of its $647 million to $663 million range.

The company expects its full-year ICR to reach the favorable low end of its 88.5% to 89.5% range and adjusted EBITDA margin to trend toward the high end of its 8.5% to 9% guidance range. TriNet also expects adjusted earnings per share to reach the high end of its $4.50 to $5.10 range.
