Deutsche Bank Aktiengesellschaft NYSE: DB said it delivered record profit before tax and continued revenue growth in the first nine months of 2026, while maintaining capital and liquidity buffers and largely completing its funding plan for the year.
Group Treasurer Richard Stewart said the bank generated revenue of EUR 25.5 billion through the first nine months, up 5% from a year earlier and on track toward its full-year ambition of about EUR 33 billion. Focused growth areas accounted for nearly 80% of the revenue increase and expanded 6% year over year, he said.
Profit before tax reached a record EUR 8.4 billion for the nine-month period, including a record third quarter. Post-tax return on tangible equity was 11.5%, while the cost-income ratio was 61.4%. Stewart said the bank had completed a substantial portion of its planned investments for the year while funding incremental spending largely through efficiency gains.
Business performance and strategy
Stewart said all divisions produced return on tangible equity of at least 12% in the first nine months, and every division increased profit before tax in each quarter of the year.
- The Private Bank recorded EUR 17 billion in net flows, a record for the division, with roughly two-thirds coming from wealth management.
- Asset management assets under management rose above EUR 1.2 trillion, supported by record third-quarter net flows of EUR 31 billion.
- The Corporate Bank reported record quarterly revenue, with continued growth in loans, deposits and client activity across its segments.
- The Investment Bank’s fixed-income, currencies and commodities revenue was close to the prior-year record level despite less favorable market conditions. In investment-banking and capital-markets activities, the bank increased its EMEA market share by 160 basis points year over year.
The bank said its performance and balance sheet remained resilient despite fiscal uncertainty in Europe and a challenging global economic environment. Stewart said progress toward the company’s 2028 objectives had strengthened management’s view that a return on tangible equity above 13% represents a floor.
During the question-and-answer session, Chief Financial Officer Raja Akram said the bank’s primary path remains organic growth, with management focused on improving capital efficiency, business mix and costs. He said the bank could consider opportunities in asset or wealth management if they were an appropriate fit, but such transactions are not currently a top priority.
Capital, credit provisions and balance sheet
The bank reported a CET1 capital ratio of 14% at the end of the third quarter, at the high end of its operating range, and a leverage ratio of 4.4%. Loans increased EUR 22 billion from the prior-year period, while deposits rose EUR 53 billion, resulting in a loan-to-deposit ratio of 69%.
Third-quarter provisions for credit losses totaled EUR 501 million. Stewart said the charge reflected proactive actions to reduce risk in the commercial real estate portfolio as well as an idiosyncratic event in Asia within the Corporate Bank. He said underlying asset quality remained strong, with leading indicators stable or improving across most portfolios.
Commercial real estate remained the primary contributor to the group’s elevated provision run rate. The bank’s higher-risk U.S. commercial real estate portfolio has declined 42% since 2022 and approximately 20% year over year, according to Stewart, reflecting repayments and risk-reduction measures. Management maintained its expectation for a gradual decline in CRE provisions in 2027 and for the group provision run rate to normalize around 30 basis points in 2028.
Risk-weighted assets declined EUR 3 billion during the quarter excluding foreign-exchange effects, primarily due to the Investment Bank’s management of market and credit risks. The bank said its CET1 maximum distributable amount buffer stood at 283 basis points, or EUR 10 billion, while its total capital requirement buffer was 321 basis points.
Akram said Deutsche Bank’s supervisory review and evaluation process requirement will decline by 25 basis points beginning next year. He attributed the reduction to the bank’s transition toward more stable and sustainably profitable businesses, higher capital levels, de-risking actions, improved governance and risk management, and reduced litigation and contingent-liability risks.
Deposits, interest income and funding
Loans increased EUR 6 billion during the third quarter to EUR 497 billion, driven by growth in wealth management, trade finance and FICC financing. Deposits rose EUR 18 billion, or 3%, to EUR 716 billion, led by corporate cash-management inflows.
Stewart said much of the Corporate Bank’s deposit growth came from sight deposits, with two-thirds to three-quarters of the quarterly increase coming from Germany. He noted that some quarter-end balances were temporary and could normalize in the fourth quarter, though management expects the broader deposit trajectory to remain positive.
Net interest income was EUR 3.7 billion across key banking-book segments and other funding. Deposit-related income benefited from volume growth and the bank’s hedge portfolio, while loan-related income was supported by stronger lending volumes. Deutsche Bank said approximately EUR 210 billion was invested in longer-term hedges and that it had locked in about 90% of expected hedge income for 2027 and 80% for 2028.
The liquidity coverage ratio was 143%, supported by EUR 242 billion of high-quality liquid assets, while the net stable funding ratio rose to 120%.
The bank issued EUR 6 billion since its prior fixed-income call, bringing year-to-date issuance to EUR 15 billion and effectively completing its EUR 10 billion to EUR 15 billion funding plan. Stewart said management will focus during the remainder of the year on potential pre-funding for 2027, when funding needs are expected to be somewhat higher.
Management reaffirmed its expectations for revenue above EUR 33 billion, assuming constructive markets, and total expenses of around EUR 21.3 billion. Excluding proactive de-risking actions and the Asia-related event, the bank expects 2026 credit-loss provisions to be slightly lower than the prior year.
