  • Ecovyst raised its 2026 outlook: Adjusted EBITDA is now forecast at $208 million to $212 million, sales at $1.05 billion to $1.07 billion, and adjusted free cash flow at $50 million to $60 million.

  • Five stocks to consider instead of Ecovyst.

Ecovyst NYSE: ECVT raised its full-year earnings and cash flow forecasts after third-quarter sales and adjusted earnings increased on higher sulfuric acid volumes, favorable pricing and a contribution from its recently acquired Calabrian business.

The company reported third-quarter sales of $309 million, up 51% from a year earlier. Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization, or EBITDA, rose more than 6% to $61 million, exceeding the high end of the company’s guidance range.

Chief Executive Officer Kurt Bitting said the company expects favorable demand to continue through the rest of 2026, supported in part by high refinery utilization. Ecovyst also shifted a customer turnaround from the fourth quarter to early 2027, reducing its expected costs this year by approximately $3 million.

Higher volumes and pricing lift results

Chief Financial Officer Laurie Bergman said third-quarter sales benefited from higher sales of both virgin and regenerated sulfuric acid, favorable pricing and the Calabrian acquisition, which closed June 30. Approximately $67 million of the sales increase reflected the pass-through of higher sulfur costs.

Adjusted EBITDA benefited from a $15 million contribution from higher volumes and a $5 million increase in net pricing, excluding the sulfur cost pass-through. Those gains were partly offset by higher manufacturing and transportation costs, inflation and increased turnaround activity, Bergman said.

The adjusted EBITDA margin fell to 19.8% from 28.1% a year earlier, primarily reflecting the effect of higher sulfur costs passed through in sales. Excluding approximately $67 million in higher sulfur cost pass-throughs, the margin would have been about 550 basis points higher, Bergman said.

Year-to-date adjusted free cash flow was $32.4 million. Bergman said cash generation reflected higher capital spending on Gulf Coast storage and logistics, as well as the working-capital impact of higher sulfur costs on inventory and receivables. At Sept. 30, the company had $167 million in available liquidity and a net debt leverage ratio of 2.1 times.

2026 outlook raised

Ecovyst now expects full-year adjusted EBITDA of $208 million to $212 million, up from its previous range of $195 million to $207 million. Bitting said most of the $9 million increase at the midpoint came from operating performance, with the balance reflecting the deferred turnaround.

The company raised its sales forecast to $1.05 billion to $1.07 billion from $1.02 billion to $1.06 billion, and its adjusted free cash flow outlook to $50 million to $60 million from $45 million to $55 million. It expects adjusted diluted net income per share of $0.63 to $0.77, compared with its prior range of $0.58 to $0.72.

For the fourth quarter, Ecovyst projects adjusted EBITDA of $54 million to $58 million. It expects regenerated sulfuric acid volume to rise from a year earlier, while virgin sulfuric acid volume is expected to decline against a strong comparison. Bergman said unplanned refinery outages in late 2025 allowed the company to shift capacity toward spot sales of virgin acid; this year, it expects to keep that capacity focused on regeneration customers.

Refinery and mining demand in focus

Bitting said stable gasoline demand, rising exports and strong refining margins are supporting refinery utilization and demand for regenerated sulfuric acid. Some refiners are deferring maintenance to maximize production, though he cautioned that postponed work could increase the risk of unplanned outages.

The company expects stable demand through year-end for virgin sulfuric acid used in nylon, industrial applications and water treatment, and positive demand from mining customers. Although the fourth-quarter Tampa Sulfur Index fell $90 to $615 a ton, Bitting said Ecovyst remains cautious about potential inventory management and destocking around year-end.

Looking to 2027, Bitting said he expects customer refinery turnarounds to be slightly higher than in 2026, but not as extensive as in 2025. Ecovyst expects to conduct six turnarounds at its sulfuric acid plants in 2027.

Bitting also said Calabrian’s integration and expected synergies remain on track. Following $2.7 million in third-quarter share repurchases, Ecovyst plans to allocate up to $20 million to opportunistic buybacks in the second half of 2026.
