Silgan NYSE: SLGN reported third-quarter 2026 adjusted earnings per share of $1.31, up 7% from the prior-year period and at the top of its projected range, as higher operating profit and lower interest expense more than offset a higher adjusted tax rate.
Net sales rose 2% year over year to approximately $2 billion, driven primarily by the pass-through of higher raw-material and other costs. Total adjusted EBIT increased 6% to $235 million, with gains led by the Metal Containers segment.
President and CEO Adam Greenlee said the company delivered the results despite muted consumer demand in parts of its portfolio, cost inflation, currency headwinds and softer conditions in Brazil. He said Silgan has raised the midpoint of its full-year adjusted EPS outlook twice during 2026.
Growth areas offset softer consumer categories
Greenlee said the company continued to see mid-single-digit growth in high-end fragrance products and wet pet food, while prescription pharmaceutical dispensing products grew by a double-digit percentage in North America. The company said its overall healthcare business is expected to represent about $250 million of revenue in 2026.
Demand remained weaker in certain food and beverage, home care, and lawn and garden categories as consumers sought to manage spending. In particular, Silgan cited lower soup demand after a customer decided during the third quarter to raise prices to recover inflation in its own operations.
“We have consumers primarily kind of in the food and beverage market, maybe a little bit of home care and lawn and garden,” Greenlee said. “That’s really where we are seeing some challenged behavior from the consumer as they continue to search for ways to stretch their dollar.”
The company said it expects volumes to be comparable with the prior year in each segment during the fourth quarter and for the full year. Greenlee said pockets of strength, including fragrance, beauty and healthcare products, are helping to offset pressure in other end markets.
Segment results
- Dispensing and Specialty Closures: Sales increased 1% from the prior year, primarily due to cost pass-throughs. Volumes were flat, as growth in fragrance and prescription pharma dispensing products was offset by lower food and beverage volumes. Adjusted EBIT declined $2 million, reflecting unrecovered inflation. Management expects pricing actions and contractual recoveries to support a year-over-year increase in the segment’s operating profit during the fourth quarter.
- Metal Containers: Sales rose 1%, while volumes declined 4%. Higher fruit and vegetable and wet pet food volumes were offset by lower soup demand. Adjusted EBIT increased $9 million, aided by a more normalized production cadence in fruit and vegetables, a stable manufacturing footprint after a multiyear cost-reduction initiative, and favorable price-over-cost performance.
- Custom Containers: Sales increased 4%, with higher cost pass-throughs partially offset by an 8% volume decline. Silgan said volumes were affected by the exit of lower-margin business associated with a prior-year footprint optimization. Adjusted EBIT exceeded the prior-year level as favorable price-over-cost and mix, including savings from the footprint changes, supported profitability.
Greenlee said the company’s cost-reduction work has materially improved its Metal Containers operating profile. Silgan closed three facilities in the prior year as part of the initiative, and management said improved planning for the fruit and vegetable pack helped streamline production during 2026.
Full-year outlook raised again
Silgan increased its full-year 2026 adjusted EPS outlook to a range of $3.83 to $3.93, compared with $3.72 in 2025. At the midpoint, the outlook represents 4% growth.
The forecast assumes low-single-digit adjusted EBIT growth, corporate expense of approximately $45 million to $50 million, interest expense of approximately $185 million, and an adjusted tax rate of 25% to 26%.
For the fourth quarter, Silgan projected adjusted EPS of $0.76 to $0.86, compared with $0.67 in the prior-year quarter. At the midpoint, the company expects adjusted EBIT to increase by roughly $10 million to $15 million year over year, with interest expense of $45 million to $50 million and a tax rate of about 25% to 26%.
The company reaffirmed its expectation for approximately $450 million in free cash flow for 2026, including capital expenditures of approximately $310 million.
Trivium acquisition and 2027 planning
Management also discussed its proposed acquisition of Trivium, which Silgan expects to close in mid-2027. The transaction is intended to establish two packaging businesses: Silgan MCC and Silgan DS, or Dispensing Solutions.
Greenlee said Silgan expects organic earnings and free-cash-flow growth in 2027, though it did not provide detailed financial guidance. Chief Financial Officer Shawn Fabry characterized the expected free-cash-flow growth as modest and said it would depend on volume growth, working-capital initiatives and capital spending.
Silgan expects to make incremental capital investments before the planned closing to prepare the businesses for the new operating structure. Greenlee said those investments could include spending on products, operating facilities, people and teams.
The company said the future Dispensing Solutions business will be more concentrated in faster-growing, higher-margin markets, including fragrance and beauty, personal care, and healthcare. Alex Hutter, senior vice president of strategy and investor relations, said fragrance and beauty and personal care would account for about half of Dispensing Solutions’ end markets, while healthcare would represent closer to 10%.
Greenlee said Silgan expects high-end fragrance and beauty products to continue growing at a mid-single-digit rate over the long term, supported by new product launches and customer partnerships. He also described prescription pharma dispensing as a high-single-digit long-term growth opportunity, though he noted the products typically require multiyear development and regulatory review cycles.
