Key Points

  • Record Q3 performance: Revenue surged 131% year over year to $560 million, beating guidance, while non-GAAP earnings per ADS rose 333% to $4.35. Growth was led by automotive Ferri products, enterprise boot drives, and SSD controllers.
  • Automotive and enterprise markets are reshaping the business: Storage solutions revenue grew more than 75% sequentially and exceeded 40% of total revenue. MonTitan enterprise controllers are gaining customer traction, with all seven announced customers expected to begin commercial ramps in 2026.
  • Strong outlook despite weak consumer demand: Silicon Motion forecast fourth-quarter revenue of $588 million to $616 million and expects 2027 revenue growth of at least 40%. Management said expanding automotive and enterprise exposure should reduce reliance on challenged PC and smartphone markets.
  • Five stocks to consider instead of Silicon Motion Technology.

Silicon Motion Technology NASDAQ: SIMO reported record third-quarter revenue and said its expanding automotive, enterprise storage and AI-related businesses are reducing its reliance on consumer device cycles.

Revenue for the September quarter rose 24% sequentially and 131% from a year earlier to $560 million, exceeding the company’s guidance range of $519 million to $541 million. Non-GAAP gross margin was 53.7%, while non-GAAP earnings per ADS reached $4.35, up 79% sequentially and 333% year over year, according to CFO Jason Tsai.

“We delivered an outstanding third quarter, surpassing our expectations, driven by stronger execution and demand trends,” Tsai said. The company recorded its fourth consecutive quarter of record revenue, with growth across most businesses led by Ferri automotive products, enterprise boot drives, and Edge and MonTitan SSD controllers.

Automotive and enterprise products drive mix shift

President and CEO Wallace Kou said Silicon Motion’s storage solutions segment, which includes Ferri products and boot drives, produced its strongest quarterly result. Segment revenue rose more than 75% sequentially and represented more than 40% of total company revenue in the third quarter.

The company said automotive products were a particular source of strength, benefiting from its portfolio of automotive-grade storage controllers and firmware. Kou said Silicon Motion has spent more than a decade developing automotive products and certifications, and that its automotive backlog has expanded as it gains share.

Silicon Motion also sees opportunities to apply Ferri products in robotics, drones and advanced networking equipment. Kou said the robotics market remains at an early stage and current volumes are small, but the company is engaged with several potential customers in humanoid robots and other physical AI applications. Tsai added that automotive-grade capabilities such as tolerance for high temperatures and vibration could provide an advantage in robotics.

Enterprise boot drives are also becoming a larger part of the company’s strategy. Kou said Silicon Motion won designs with several new Tier 1 customers in networking and AI infrastructure during the third quarter. Those programs are expected to ramp over the next two years.

The company estimates the enterprise boot-drive market will be about $3 billion in 2026 and exceed $5 billion by 2030. It also identified a separate opportunity in near-CPU boot drives that use onboard DRAM, which it estimates could surpass $10 billion by 2030. Silicon Motion expects to begin ramping products for that market in the second half of 2027, subject to customer and supply-chain execution.

MonTitan enterprise controller ramp continues

Silicon Motion said its MonTitan enterprise SSD controller business is gaining traction with NAND manufacturers, hyperscalers, cloud service providers and module makers. The company said its first two customers began shipping TLC enterprise SSDs for compute applications using MonTitan controllers in the second quarter.

All seven announced customers remain on track to begin commercial ramps during 2026, according to Kou. In the near term, the company expects TLC-based compute SSDs to ramp faster than QLC-based data-storage SSDs, until broader availability of 2-terabit QLC NAND dies.

During the third quarter, Silicon Motion taped out its next-generation 4-nanometer PCIe 6 MonTitan controller. The product is intended for hyperscalers and cloud service providers, with sampling expected in the first quarter of 2027. Kou said the company has one design involving multiple Tier 1 customers, including NAND makers, hyperscalers and cloud providers.

In its Edge SSD controller business, Silicon Motion reported sequential and year-over-year growth. The company said PCIe 5 products are gaining adoption in PCs and currently account for about 10% of the PC market. Kou said the company expects PCIe 5 penetration to reach 20% to 25% by the end of 2027, supporting higher average selling prices as the market transitions from PCIe 4.

Consumer markets remain challenged

Management said higher memory and storage prices continue to pressure PC and smartphone makers, which are trying to offer affordable products amid rising NAND and DRAM costs. Silicon Motion’s eMMC and UFS revenue declined modestly from the prior quarter because of customer launch timing and difficult smartphone conditions.

The company expects eMMC and UFS revenue to remain relatively flat in the near term. However, Kou said new UFS 4.1 and UFS 5 controllers could support growth next year and beyond through higher average selling prices.

While the broader consumer environment remains difficult, Silicon Motion said its increasing exposure to automotive and enterprise applications should make traditional consumer seasonality less pronounced. Tsai said consumer cycles will have less influence on results as enterprise and Ferri products become a larger part of the business.

Fourth-quarter and 2027 outlook

For the fourth quarter, Silicon Motion forecast revenue of $588 million to $616 million, representing sequential growth of 5% to 10%. Management expects growth across nearly all product segments, led by Ferri automotive products, enterprise boot-drive solutions and MonTitan enterprise controllers.

The company expects its SSD controller business to be flat to slightly lower sequentially, reflecting memory and storage market conditions and typical seasonal patterns. Silicon Motion projected fourth-quarter gross margin of 54% to 55% and operating margin of 36% to 37%.

For 2026, management said revenue is on track to more than double from the prior year and operating margin is expected to exceed 30% exiting the year. Looking ahead, Tsai said Silicon Motion expects revenue to grow by at least 40% in 2027, supported by backlog across its businesses. The company expects gross margin to remain in the low-to-mid-50% range as enterprise controllers and Ferri automotive products account for more of its mix.

Silicon Motion also highlighted its August convertible-note offering, which raised $1.15 billion in aggregate principal amount and generated $1.127 billion in net proceeds. The company ended the third quarter with $953.6 million in cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash. Tsai said the capital raise is expected to fund working-capital needs for the next several years based on current forecasts, while helping the company support inventory growth and business expansion.
