Wingstop NASDAQ: WING reported a 5.4% decline in domestic same-store sales for its fiscal third quarter of 2026, prompting the restaurant chain to lower its full-year domestic same-store sales outlook as it works to rebuild transaction growth through revised marketing, loyalty and operational initiatives.
President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Skipworth said the third-quarter sales performance fell below the company’s expectations as consumer pressures intensified in recent months. Wingstop now expects full-year domestic same-store sales to decline approximately 6.5% to 7%.
“Our top priority is improving sales performance and rebuilding transaction growth,” Skipworth said. He added that the company is moving with urgency on initiatives it can control, though improvements are taking longer than initially anticipated.
Sales, Earnings and Restaurant Growth
System-wide sales rose 6% to approximately $1.4 billion during the third quarter, supported by 76 net new restaurant openings globally. Wingstop ended the quarter with 3,331 restaurants, representing nearly 14% year-over-year system growth.
Royalty revenue, franchise fees and other revenue increased 6.3% to $86.3 million. Company-owned restaurant sales rose 6.9% to $34.8 million, reflecting additional corporate restaurants opened or acquired since the prior year, partially offset by a 2.7% decline in company-owned same-store sales.
Net income was $29.1 million, or $1.07 per diluted share, compared with $28.5 million, or $1.02 per diluted share, a year earlier. Adjusted EBITDA increased 0.5% to $64 million. Chief Financial Officer Alex Kaleida said earnings per share included an approximately $0.07 impact from additional depreciation and amortization tied to technology investments, including Club Wingstop and artificial intelligence capabilities.
Company-owned restaurant costs increased 340 basis points to 78.2% of company-owned restaurant sales. Kaleida attributed the increase primarily to sales deleverage on labor and restaurant operating expenses, partly offset by lower bone-in wing costs. The company also incurred labor, training and deferred maintenance costs associated with its acquisition of 13 Tampa-area restaurants for approximately $32 million.
Marketing Shift Targets Consideration and Value
Skipworth said Wingstop identified an opportunity to shift marketing away from an emphasis on awareness and toward driving consumer consideration. The company is focusing its media investments on occasions where it believes Wingstop has the highest relevance, including football viewing and group occasions.
The revised approach uses more premium video placements and 30-second advertising spots to build reach, followed by 15-second spots and always-on social media efforts. Marketing is intended to connect the chain’s bone-in wings, flavors and food quality with value messaging.
Most of the updated marketing efforts began in the second week of September, limiting their effect on third-quarter results. Still, Skipworth cited improving first-party average weekly sales, increased guest reactivation, fewer lapsed guests and higher organic search traffic as early positive indicators. He also pointed to engagement with the Watch Party Bundle and Thursday Night Football promotions.
The company said it is increasing fourth-quarter marketing investment through SG&A spending. Wingstop updated its full-year SG&A outlook to $138 million to $140 million, including the incremental marketing spending and approximately $21 million in expected full-year stock-based compensation expense. Kaleida said the elevated fourth-quarter spending would result in adjusted EBITDA below prior expectations.
Loyalty, Personalization and Operations
Wingstop launched its Club Wingstop loyalty program nationally in May and said enrollment is running ahead of plan. The company is now concentrating on tactics designed to increase member engagement and purchase frequency.
According to Skipworth, newly enrolled Club Wingstop members return within 30 days at a rate 13 percentage points higher than non-members. Purchase frequency among members who have completed 90 days in the program has increased by nearly 20%, he said.
The company has begun using its AI-driven personalization engine to test targeted offers and messages. Guests receiving personalized offers generated higher total sales than those who did not receive offers, according to management. Wingstop is also using the loyalty platform for initiatives including Wing Pass, a Watch Party Bundle punch card, merchandise drops, early access to flavors and sports and entertainment experiences.
Operationally, Wingstop retrained its system over the past three months and introduced new restaurant standards, a more comprehensive restaurant scorecard and an operating toolkit focused on food quality, order accuracy and speed of service. Skipworth said guest complaints related to food quality and preparation declined about 30% during 2026 compared with the same period last year. He identified order accuracy as a continuing opportunity.
Development Pipeline and Updated Outlook
Wingstop lowered its 2026 global development outlook to 440 to 450 net new restaurants, representing unit growth of 14.4% to 14.7%. Kaleida said the revision reflects timing changes, particularly longer construction timelines for ground-up shopping center locations. Some delayed openings are expected to shift into 2027.
The company said its global pipeline remains above 2,300 committed restaurants. Existing brand partners accounted for 98% of openings in the first nine months of 2026.
Wingstop opened 21 restaurants outside the United States in the quarter, bringing its international footprint to 544 locations, up more than 27% year over year. The company opened eight new international markets during the past year and a half, launched flagship restaurants in Thailand, Spain and Italy, and reached 100 restaurants in the United Kingdom. Management said India, which it views as a potential 1,000-restaurant market, is expected to open by early 2027.
The company declared a quarterly dividend of $0.33 per share, totaling $9 million, payable Dec. 4 to shareholders of record on Nov. 13. Wingstop also repurchased approximately 191,000 shares for $25 million during the quarter, bringing year-to-date repurchases to $102.9 million. About $288.4 million remained under its repurchase authorization at quarter-end.
