Key Points

  • Q3 results improved: XPLR generated about $471 million in Adjusted EBITDA and $164 million in free cash flow before growth, aided by more normal wind conditions and lower operating expenses at existing projects.
  • Outlook was tempered by weaker renewable resources: Management expects 2026 results near the lower end of its previous ranges, citing soft Western wind and solar conditions, anticipated El Niño effects, and higher operating costs. For 2027, it guided to $1.56–$1.70 billion in Adjusted EBITDA and $525–$600 million in free cash flow before growth.
  • Portfolio actions continue: XPLR completed about 85% of its planned 2026 repowering work and sold roughly 400 MW of interconnection assets and rights, with proceeds supporting battery-storage investment and project upgrades. It also retired its remaining 2026 unsecured notes, leaving no corporate debt maturities that year.
  • Five stocks we like better than XPLR Infrastructure.

XPLR Infrastructure NYSE: XIFR reported third-quarter 2026 results that reflected improved wind conditions and lower operating expenses at existing projects, while management narrowed its outlook toward the lower end of its prior full-year ranges because of weaker-than-expected renewable resource conditions in the West and anticipated El Niño effects.

The company generated approximately $471 million in Adjusted EBITDA and $164 million in free cash flow before growth during the third quarter. Existing projects contributed about $49 million of year-over-year Adjusted EBITDA growth and roughly $24 million of growth in free cash flow before growth, according to Chief Financial Officer Jessica Geoffroy.

Geoffroy said the improvement primarily reflected more normalized wind resources compared with the prior-year period and a favorable comparison in net operating expenses. Those benefits were partly offset in free cash flow before growth by lower proceeds from tax-equity investors and higher project financing costs associated with the company's 2025 repowering program.

Results also reflected the impact of asset dispositions completed in September 2025. In addition, free cash flow before growth was affected by higher corporate interest payments on approximately $1.75 billion of unsecured notes issued in March 2025. The third quarter included full semiannual interest payments on the notes, compared with only a partial-period impact in the comparable prior-year period.

Updated 2026 outlook and 2027 guidance

As it approaches year-end, XPLR said it expects 2026 Adjusted EBITDA to finish in the lower half of its previous guidance range and free cash flow before growth to be at or near the low end of the prior range.

Management cited weaker-than-expected wind and solar resources in the West, where the company has higher-value power purchase agreements on a dollar-per-megawatt-hour basis. Geoffroy also said the updated outlook incorporates expectations for at least 3% lower wind resource for the remainder of 2026 due to El Niño conditions, along with somewhat higher net operating and maintenance expenses.

The company said a 1% deviation in wind production across its fleet equates to roughly $4 million to $6 million of Adjusted EBITDA for the balance of 2026.

For 2027, XPLR introduced guidance for Adjusted EBITDA of $1.56 billion to $1.70 billion and free cash flow before growth of $525 million to $600 million. The low end of those ranges includes an estimated impact from lower wind resources related to El Niño, primarily during the first half of the year.

During the question-and-answer session, Geoffroy said the low end of 2027 Adjusted EBITDA guidance incorporates an approximately $32 million potential El Niño impact, while the free-cash-flow range includes an estimated $25 million impact. She said the assumption equates to roughly 6% lower wind resources, concentrated in the first quarter, while noting management had also discussed impacts in the first half of 2027.

The expected year-over-year reduction in 2027 Adjusted EBITDA is primarily tied to the expiration of tax-credit eligibility at certain existing assets. Geoffroy said the roll-off reflects the normal maturation of the renewable-energy portfolio and that maturing tax-equity arrangements should result in simpler ownership structures and a larger share of project cash flows for XPLR, partially offsetting the decline in reported Adjusted EBITDA.

For free cash flow before growth, the expected net effect from tax-credit changes in 2027 is about $25 million, while the year-over-year comparison also includes approximately $20 million of higher net interest expense. XPLR said it currently expects 2028 free cash flow before growth to be in line with 2027.

Repowering, interconnection sales and storage investment

President and Chief Executive Officer Alan Liu said XPLR had completed approximately 85% of its planned 2026 repowering projects. The remaining work is progressing, he said, and is expected to enhance the long-term value of the portfolio.

The company also continued work on its previously announced interconnection-sales and battery-storage co-investment agreement with NextEra Energy Resources. The first two joint ventures under that arrangement were formed in July, and XPLR is working on the remaining contemplated projects.

XPLR completed sales of approximately 400 megawatts of additional interconnection assets and rights to NextEra Energy Resources during August and October. About 200 MW of those sales were connected to the agreement and are expected to help fund part of XPLR's net equity investment in four battery-storage projects. Proceeds from the remaining approximately 200 MW are expected to support reinvestment in underlying projects.

Liu said the company owns multiple gigawatts of surplus interconnection capacity and views the assets as embedded options that do not currently generate cash but can be monetized over time. He said XPLR would continue evaluating direct sales and other monetization opportunities where they make economic sense.

Responding to a question on reinvestment proceeds, Liu said some funding would support already planned upgrades to site controls and communications infrastructure at certain projects. He characterized the interconnection monetization as opportunistic and said the proceeds would remain at the projects to offset planned spending.

Debt and contract optimization

XPLR retired the remaining approximately $33 million balance of its 2026 unsecured notes in October, leaving no remaining corporate debt maturities in 2026, Liu said.

Management also highlighted contract-optimization opportunities across its portfolio. Liu said customers have increasingly been willing to discuss longer-term power needs ahead of contract expirations, and the company is evaluating potential extensions or contract changes across multiple markets.

He said XPLR’s objective is not simply to extend contracts, but to pursue arrangements that improve long-term economics and the free-cash-flow-before-growth profile of its assets. While the impact on 2027 guidance is incremental, Liu said the company sees potential opportunities over the next several years.
