GAIL (India) (OTCMKTS:GAILF), originally incorporated as the Gas Authority of India Limited in 1984, is India’s largest state‐owned natural gas processing and distribution company. Headquartered in New Delhi, GAIL operates under the administrative control of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas and oversees one of the country’s most extensive transmission pipeline networks. The company’s infrastructure supports the movement of natural gas from production fields to end users across India, facilitating energy access for industrial, commercial, and residential consumers.
GAIL’s core business activities encompass natural gas transmission, marketing, and trading, along with the processing, transmission and marketing of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Through its petrochemical division, the company manufactures a range of polymers, including high‐density and linear low‐density polyethylene, polypropylene and other value‐added products derived from ethylene and propylene feedstocks. GAIL also holds interests in natural gas exploration and production, as well as in fertilizer feedstock supply, offering integrated services across the gas value chain.
Beyond its domestic network, GAIL has pursued strategic investments and joint ventures in international markets, with stakes in LNG regasification terminals, exploration blocks and pipeline projects in regions such as Southeast Asia, Australia and North America. The company has also executed cross-border pipeline linkages, notably the India–Bangladesh Friendship Pipeline, to strengthen regional energy cooperation. Through its overseas arm, GAIL Global, it engages in gas marketing, logistics and technical consultancy services to support global energy infrastructure development.
Governed by a board of directors and led by a Chairman & Managing Director, GAIL has expanded its focus to include emerging areas such as city gas distribution, petrochemical capacity enhancement and new‐energy solutions. By leveraging its extensive pipeline network and technical expertise, the company continues to explore opportunities in LNG import terminals, hydrogen production and carbon‐capture initiatives, aligning its growth strategy with India’s broader energy‐transition objectives.
