In 2010, a rare earth metal called dysprosium surged 2,512 percent in two and a half years after China cut exports while demand from wind turbines and electric vehicles stayed high. Economists call this a commodity crunch: new infrastructure forces demand higher while supply cannot keep pace. It happened with oil in the 1970s, uranium in the 2000s, and rare earths in 2010.
