Key Points

  • Q1 fiscal 2027 results missed expectations: Revenue rose 8% to $934 million, but organic constant-currency growth was 2% and adjusted EBITDA fell 9% to $89.8 million. Management maintained its full-year outlook while accelerating cost reductions.
  • VistaPrint faced growth and channel pressures from weaker European demand, legacy products and changing customer-discovery trends, although higher-value customers and AI-assisted discovery are growing. Elevated backlog is expected to support second-quarter revenue.
  • Cimpress reaffirmed fiscal 2027 targets of at least 7% reported revenue growth, 3% organic growth, $520 million or more in adjusted EBITDA and approximately $200 million in adjusted free cash flow. Management expects profitability to improve as acquisitions, cost savings and lower manufacturing startup costs contribute.

Cimpress NASDAQ: CMPR said first-quarter fiscal 2027 results fell below its expectations, though management maintained its full-year outlook and said it is accelerating cost reductions to help protect profit and cash-flow targets.

Revenue for the quarter totaled $934 million, up 8% on a reported basis and 2% on an organic constant-currency basis. Chief Financial Officer Sean Quinn said the organic growth rate was below the company’s expectations. Adjusted EBITDA declined 9% year over year to $89.8 million.

Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Robert Keane said the company’s internal fiscal 2027 plan remains above its publicly issued guidance. “We remain confident in our fiscal 2027 guidance,” Keane said, adding that cost actions are being accelerated as “an insurance plan” for meeting financial objectives amid an uncertain operating environment.

VistaPrint Growth and Cost Pressures

VistaPrint recorded 2% organic constant-currency growth in the quarter, with strength in promotional products, apparel and gifts; marketing materials; and packaging. However, Quinn said the business represented the largest gap versus the company’s expectations, citing slower growth in Europe, changes in marketing-channel performance and pressure in legacy products and lower-value customer cohorts.

Quinn said VistaPrint’s backlog was elevated at quarter-end and is expected to support second-quarter revenue. He also noted that a revenue-recognition change related to the Wix partnership affected the reported growth rate. Excluding that effect and backlog timing, VistaPrint growth was consistent with the 3% rate seen in the third and fourth quarters of fiscal 2026, though below management’s ambitions.

Organic search and affiliate bookings were VistaPrint’s weakest channels on a year-over-year basis, according to Quinn. He pointed to evolving customer discovery behavior, including AI Overviews in Google, more search traffic shifting from organic to paid channels, and the growing relevance of large language models.

At the same time, management said AI-assisted organic discovery is Cimpress’ fastest-growing channel, though it remains smaller today. The company is also seeing growth in customer uploads from users designing through large language models and bringing those designs to VistaPrint.

Keane said the company is increasingly focused on higher-value customers and expanded offerings. VistaPrint’s variable gross profit per customer increased 7% year over year, while variable gross profit from customers generating more than $650 in annual variable gross profit rose 15%.

“We are becoming a branding partner to our customers,” Keane said, citing a broader product range, improved site merchandising and services tailored for higher-value customers.

Manufacturing, Tariffs and Expenses

Several cost items weighed on quarterly profitability. Quinn said North American manufacturing startup costs were $5.9 million higher year over year, while duties and tariffs on certain goods sold to U.S. customers added $4.2 million in costs. Net energy-related input costs increased by $1.8 million, and the company faced a $1.4 million impact from the nonrecurrence of a prior-year compensation benefit.

Those pressures were partly offset by $7.5 million in IEEPA tariff refunds related to earlier periods. Quinn said the year-over-year effects of startup costs and Canadian tariffs are expected to lessen in the second half of fiscal 2027. Cimpress also reported roughly $4 million in restructuring costs during the quarter as it pursues efficiency actions.

The company said it is expanding production capabilities, including a new European VistaPrint line for full-color corrugated boxes, Pixartprinting’s new Pennsylvania production of booklets, catalogs, magazines and roll labels, and two new facilities in Mexico.

BoxUp, Cimpress’ packaging business, increased revenue from external customers by 16% and more than doubled its cross-Cimpress fulfillment revenue to VistaPrint, according to Keane.

Acquisitions, Cash Flow and Outlook

Upload & Print revenue rose 23% on a reported basis and 4% organically on a combined basis. Recent acquisitions performed in line with expectations, management said. PrintBrothers grew reported revenue 28%, while The Print Group grew 13%.

Keane said acquisitions contributed $60 million of first-quarter revenue and $3.5 million of EBITDA net of transaction costs. Cimpress continues to expect acquired businesses to add $165 million to $175 million in revenue and $18 million to $21 million in EBITDA during fiscal 2027.

Operating cash flow improved by $3.9 million to $28.9 million, while adjusted free cash flow was an outflow of $9.3 million, an $8.5 million improvement from the prior year. The company ended the quarter with $120 million in cash and $35 million drawn on its $250 million revolver.

Net leverage was 3.2 times trailing-12-month EBITDA, up from 2.9 times at the end of fiscal 2026, primarily due to the Saxoprint acquisition. Quinn said Cimpress remains on track to reach approximately 2.5 times leverage by the end of fiscal 2027 and meaningfully below 2.0 times by the end of fiscal 2028, subject to capital-allocation decisions.

Cimpress maintained its fiscal 2027 guidance for at least 7% reported revenue growth, at least 3% organic constant-currency growth, adjusted EBITDA of at least $520 million and approximately $200 million in adjusted free cash flow. For fiscal 2028, it continues to target 4% to 6% organic constant-currency growth, at least $615 million in adjusted EBITDA and adjusted free cash flow conversion of about 45% of EBITDA.

Management expects profit growth to build from the second quarter through the remainder of fiscal 2027 as acquisition contributions, cost savings and reduced manufacturing startup costs gain momentum.
