Ecolab NYSE: ECL said its third-quarter results marked an “inflection point,” as its core operations strengthened and its growth businesses accelerated, driving 7% organic sales growth and 11% organic operating-income growth.
Chairman and CEO Christophe Beck said the company maintained its organic gross margin despite significant commodity-cost inflation, while organic operating-income margin expanded to 19.6%. He attributed the performance to pricing execution, supply-chain management and productivity gains from the company’s One Ecolab growth initiative.
“Our core businesses strengthened, our growth engines accelerated,” Beck said, adding that each business outperformed its end market during the quarter. Ecolab expects commodity costs to remain elevated and said it plans to continue offsetting the pressure through pricing and disciplined supply-chain management.
On a pro forma basis including the operating performance of CoolIT and Ovivo, third-quarter sales would have grown at a high-single-digit rate and adjusted earnings per share would have risen by a mid-teens percentage rate, according to Beck.
Core Businesses Show Broad-Based Growth
Food & Beverage organic sales growth accelerated to 8%, supported by broad-based gains across dairy, protein and beverage markets. Beck said the business benefited from combining water and hygiene offerings to help customers improve food safety, operating performance and environmental outcomes.
Light Water organic sales growth accelerated to 5%, with growth in manufacturing and institutional markets. Paper and heavy-water operations also returned to growth, aided by new business wins and pricing, Beck said.
Institutional and specialty performance remained steady despite a more difficult environment, including a mid-single-digit decline in North American restaurant food traffic. Beck said Ecolab intends to increase its sales presence in North America, integrate service delivery across restaurants, hotels, quick-service establishments and retail customers, and expand cross-selling of hygiene, water, pest-control and auditing offerings.
The company aims to double its North American field sales capacity in institutional operations, according to Beck. He said the initiative is intended to increase market share and improve both volume and value-based pricing in markets that are not expanding.
Growth Engines Gain Momentum
Life Sciences posted 17% organic sales growth, led again by bioprocessing. Beck said the company opened its latest Life Sciences plant in China during the previous month, adding capacity to serve Asian demand. He said the business is approaching $1 billion in sales and remains on a path toward a 30% operating-income margin over the next several years.
Beck said Ecolab had not seen any impact on demand from negative headlines related to an mRNA vaccine company. He described a 10% to 12% sales-growth range as a reasonable longer-term baseline for Life Sciences, though he cautioned that recent earnings growth benefited from comparison with a maintenance period a year earlier.
Ecolab Digital sales rose 34%. Beck said the business currently has greater software than hardware exposure, but he expects a more balanced mix over time, combining equipment with recurring rental, lease, software and data-consumption revenue. The company has connected fewer than 100,000 locations digitally out of nearly 3 million locations globally, he said.
Pest Elimination organic sales growth accelerated to 8%, supported by new business and Pest Intelligence. The digital platform now connects more than 800,000 devices, Beck said. He expects digital monitoring to improve operating efficiency and margins over the next one to two years as deployments expand globally.
Global High-Tech Leads Growth
Global High-Tech, Ecolab’s largest growth engine, posted 63% organic sales growth, driven by data-center cooling and circular-water offerings for microelectronics. Beck said the company’s CoolIT acquisition more than doubled its sales and that Ovivo delivered strong double-digit growth compared with its pre-acquisition sales level.
CoolIT’s liquid-cooling technology and Ovivo’s ultrapure-water systems are being integrated with Ecolab’s digital monitoring and service capabilities. Beck said the company sees an opportunity to offer integrated cooling services for data centers and circular-water systems for semiconductor fabrication facilities.
Ecolab has outlined an ambition for Global High-Tech to grow more than 25% annually, reach $4 billion in sales by 2030 and generate a 25% operating-income margin. Beck cautioned that the 63% quarterly growth rate should not be viewed as a steady-state rate, noting that quarterly results can vary based on project timing and deliveries.
The company plans to add manufacturing capacity for coolant distribution units, cold plates, monitoring technology and coolants. While Calgary will remain a key base for CoolIT, Beck said Ecolab expects to expand production closer to customers globally.
Outlook and Capital Priorities
For 2027, Ecolab expects organic sales growth at the upper end of its 5% to 7% target range and expects adjusted operating-income margin to reach 20%. Beck said adjusted earnings-per-share growth is expected to accelerate in the second half of the year as the company laps transaction-related impacts and Nalco amortization.
He described underlying earnings growth as being in the mid-teens, excluding amortization and interest expenses associated with acquisitions. CFO Scott Kirkland said CoolIT-related interest and amortization represented about a 10% headwind in the third quarter and are expected to create about a 12% drag in the fourth quarter due to an additional month of international-business impact.
Beck said Ecolab’s immediate priorities are integrating CoolIT and Ovivo and reducing leverage toward a previously discussed two-times level. While the company continues to evaluate acquisition opportunities, he said no additional transaction is imminent.
