Key Points

  • Record NAL production and sales strengthened results: Elevra mined more than 466,000 tonnes of ore, produced 54,907 tonnes of spodumene concentrate and increased sales 71% sequentially. Revenue rose 137% to $74 million, while unit operating costs fell 14% to $780 per tonne sold.
  • The NAL expansion has entered execution: Engineering and procurement are underway, with the project targeting average annual production of 373,000 tonnes and projected life-of-mine costs of $630 per tonne. Elevra expects to spend $100 million–$120 million on the expansion and Moblan studies during fiscal 2027.
  • Elevra improved its funding and commercial position but flagged safety concerns: Cash increased to $319 million, and new offtake agreements with Mangrove Lithium and LG Energy Solution leave the company fully sold for at least eight months. However, recordable injuries rose to six during the quarter, prompting increased safety oversight.

Elevra Lithium NASDAQ: ELVR reported a stronger start to fiscal 2027, driven by record mining and milling activity at its North American Lithium operation, higher concentrate sales and lower unit costs. The company also said its NAL expansion has entered execution, while it continues to streamline its portfolio around North American projects.

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Lucas Dow said the September quarter delivered record ore mined and mill throughput, along with the operation’s second-highest quarterly spodumene concentrate production. The company mined more than 466,000 tonnes of ore, up 25% from the June quarter, and processed nearly 365,000 tonnes through the mill.

NAL produced 54,907 tonnes of spodumene concentrate at an average grade of 5.1%. Recovery held at 70%, supported by sustained mill utilization above 90%, sorting performance on the run-of-mine pad and crushing circuit, and a modest increase in mill feed grade, Dow said.

Sales Rise as Costs Decline

Elevra sold 58,134 tonnes of spodumene concentrate during the quarter, an increase of 71% from the prior quarter. Revenue rose 137% to $74 million as sales volumes and realized pricing increased.

The average realized price was $1,276 per tonne on an FOB basis, equivalent to $1,524 per tonne on an SC6 basis. The per-tonne realized price was 39% higher than in the June quarter. However, the company said the reported pricing remains provisional for two shipments dispatched during the period, with final pricing to be determined in the December quarter.

Chief Financial Officer Christian Cortes said final pricing is generally based on the average market price in the month after cargo arrives at the discharge port. As an example, he said a shipment that departed in July and arrived in September will be priced using the October monthly average, while a late-August shipment is expected to be priced using November averages.

The company has moved away from prior arrangements involving longer pricing lags, according to Cortes. Dow said the approach is a standard methodology in the sector. Elevra reports FOB prices net of commissions paid to its marketing agent for applicable cargoes.

Unit operating costs fell 14% sequentially to $780 per tonne sold, from $907 per tonne in the June quarter. Dow attributed the improvement primarily to higher volumes, lower ore-processing costs, improved crusher performance and plant reliability. A stronger U.S. dollar against the Canadian dollar reduced reported costs by about $9 per tonne sold.

Responding to an analyst question, Dow said the strip ratio was about nine during the quarter, compared with a forecast of about 10 for the full fiscal year, indicating additional stripping activity is expected later in the year.

Expansion Moves Into Execution

Elevra said its staged NAL expansion has progressed into execution following groundbreaking in late June. Detailed engineering is underway, procurement packages for long-lead equipment have been issued, and work has begun to dismantle the site’s legacy carbonate plant to create space for mill upgrades.

A pre-feasibility study released in September outlined a pathway to average annual concentrate production of 373,000 tonnes after the expansion. That figure was 10% above the estimate in a prior scoping study, which the company attributed to improved mill feed grades expected from ore sorting.

The study projected life-of-mine average C1 operating costs of $630 per tonne, compared with the company’s current cost performance, as higher production is expected to spread costs across more tonnes. Dow told analysts that the expansion is expected to reduce unit operating costs by roughly $150 to $160 per tonne.

The company said upfront capital expenditure remains unchanged from previous estimates. The project remains on schedule, on budget and fully funded through a strategic financing package announced in May, Elevra said. Capital expenditures at NAL totaled $9 million in the September quarter, covering sustaining projects and initial expansion work.

For fiscal 2027, Elevra expects total capital expenditures of $120 million to $140 million, including $100 million to $120 million for the NAL expansion and Moblan studies. Management expects spending to increase through the remainder of the fiscal year as expansion activity and development work ramp up.

Offtake Agreements and Market Commentary

The company announced two binding offtake agreements. In August, it finalized an agreement to supply up to 144,000 tonnes annually to Mangrove Lithium’s proposed Canadian lithium chemical conversion facility. On Oct. 8, it signed a three-year agreement with LG Energy Solution for a base volume of 240,000 tonnes of spodumene concentrate, with supply expected to begin during the current calendar year.

Dow said the agreements support Elevra’s strategy of improving offtake terms, commercial certainty and financial outcomes. The company did not disclose specific pricing terms or whether the LG Energy Solution agreement includes a floor price, citing confidentiality provisions.

Management said the physical spodumene market remains tight despite recent price volatility. Cortes said customer interest in available spot material and multi-year agreements remains solid, while the company’s two offtake customers have committed to volumes that leave Elevra fully sold for at least the next eight months.

Cortes said he did not believe supply-side developments were the main driver of the recent rapid price decline. Instead, he pointed to negative sentiment linked to concerns over Chinese battery-production data and possible inventory within the broader value chain.

Cash Position, Portfolio Changes and Safety

Elevra ended the September quarter with $319 million in cash, up from $255 million at the end of June. The increase included $46 million from convertible notes issued to Canada Growth Fund in August and $34 million of cash generated from NAL operations.

Proceeds from the October sale of Elevra’s interest in the Ewoyaa project to Huayou Cobalt, approximately $71 million before fees and taxes, were not included in the September cash balance. The company said the sale removes future capital commitments and simplifies the structure associated with the project’s joint venture and offtake agreements.

Elevra also completed the sale of rights over the Tabba Tabba Tenement in Western Australia to Wildcat Resources for total consideration of A$16 million, while retaining a contingent royalty. The company received A$5 million in cash and A$8 million in Wildcat shares, which it subsequently sold for A$9 million. A final A$3 million payment remains outstanding.

While reporting operational progress, Dow said safety performance was below expectations. Elevra recorded six recordable injuries during the September quarter, compared with four across the preceding two quarters combined. The company said it is increasing field leadership, coaching and application of critical risk controls as activity grows around the NAL expansion.
