Genworth Financial NYSE: GNW reported a third-quarter 2026 net loss of $41 million as losses in its closed block insurance business offset earnings from mortgage insurer Enact. The company also warned that its annual review of insurance assumptions could have a materially unfavorable financial impact.
Adjusted operating income excluding the closed block was $102 million, driven by $132 million of adjusted operating income attributable to Genworth from its approximately 81%-owned Enact business. Corporate and other operations posted a $30 million adjusted operating loss, reflecting CareScout investment and holding company debt service.
The earnings call was the last for President and CEO Tom McInerney, who plans to retire at year-end. McInerney said Chief Financial Officer Jerome Upton will succeed him, calling Upton a trusted partner in strengthening the company’s financial foundation and developing its strategy.
Closed Block Review Could Weigh on Results
Genworth’s closed block segment reported an adjusted operating loss of $146 million. The result included a $111 million pretax liability remeasurement loss from differences between actual and expected experience, primarily in long-term care insurance.
Upton said actual-versus-expected losses have been running above the level implied by the company’s previous expectation of approximately $300 million for the full year, primarily because of lower mortality. The third-quarter loss also reflected lower policy terminations and higher utilization, he said.
The company is reviewing assumptions including benefit utilization, mortality, claim terminations and management actions. Upton said early analysis suggests the aggregate impact of U.S. generally accepted accounting principles assumption updates could be “materially unfavorable,” particularly for long-term care, because of care-cost inflation and related utilization trends.
Upton said the review and statutory cash flow testing are ongoing. The company plans to discuss the results on its fourth-quarter call. Its initial assessment indicates that margins at Genworth Life Insurance Company, or GLIC, should remain positive, he said. Genworth does not plan to inject capital into GLIC and its subsidiaries and does not expect capital returns from them.
Separately, Genworth entered a replacement reinsurance arrangement in October for some universal life products in response to statutory accounting changes. Upton said the changes are expected to hurt fourth-quarter statutory profit and the risk-based capital ratio, but will not affect GAAP results.
Enact Supports Capital Returns
Enact’s results included a $37 million pretax reserve release, which Upton attributed to continued strong cure performance. New insurance written was $14.1 billion, down from the prior quarter, while primary insurance in force rose to $275 billion.
Genworth received $122 million in capital returns from Enact during the quarter. Following Enact’s updated plans to return approximately $600 million to its shareholders in 2026, Genworth expects to receive around $485 million for the full year.
Genworth repurchased $80 million of its shares during the quarter and another $40 million in October. It now expects full-year repurchases of $275 million to $300 million, subject to factors including market conditions, business performance and its share price. The company expanded its repurchase authorization by $500 million in September and surpassed $1 billion in cumulative repurchases in October.
Since the program began in 2022, Genworth has reduced its outstanding share count by approximately 27%, from 511 million to 370 million shares through Oct. 31. It also retired $21 million of principal debt during the third quarter, leaving holding company debt at $747 million.
CareScout Revenue Target Maintained
CareScout Services generated $7 million in third-quarter revenue and $19 million through the first nine months of the year. Genworth maintained its target of $25 million in 2026 revenue for the business and expects to invest approximately $55 million in it this year.
CareScout facilitated approximately 1,500 matches between care seekers and home care or senior living providers during the quarter. Matches approximately doubled year over year for the first nine months, but Upton said volumes are below the pace needed to reach the previously disclosed full-year target of approximately 7,500.
McInerney said CareScout’s home care network includes more than 1,200 locations, while its senior living network has approximately 1,200 communities. The company is targeting at least 2,000 senior living communities by year-end.
Rate Actions and Litigation Update
Genworth secured $44 million in gross incremental long-term care premium approvals during the third quarter, with an average increase of 34%. McInerney said the company expects 2026 premium approvals and benefit reductions to contribute approximately $1 billion on a net present value basis, broadly in line with 2025.
On the AXA Santander litigation, McInerney said a UK appeals court ruled against AXA in September, finding Santander was not liable for the vast majority of losses claimed. AXA sought permission to appeal in October. Genworth General Counsel Greg Karawan said there is no set deadline for a response, though his best estimate is one to three months. Genworth has not included potential recoveries in its capital allocation plans, McInerney said.
